Myth or true?

He's having fun at your expense. Do you really believe there is a conspiracy to make tiggers rare? What about the other types of copepods, they are not good enough to be sterilized? How and why would a company pay and research to do this? He got you pretty good, its funny though.

I don’t know if they are sterile, but they are a temperate species, which may be why they don’t breed readily in our tanks. If you want lots of pods, of a variety of species, that will do well at tropical temps, just get a pound or two of real live rock. It will seed you’re tank.

I mean if anything I thought he wasn’t lying because he wasn’t pushing the pods on me. When I went to check out he asked me why I buy so many tigger pods and said I should be buying them on algae-barn which I do from time to time so if anything I found it rather strange that he didn’t want to sell me the pods and lose out on that business.

Setting up a new Reefer 170, any recommendations on where I should get the rock from? I want to get real life rock but worry they might bring too many pests into a frag tank.

Always get your pods spayed or neutered.

Pods come in on everything so I don’t see sterilizing them being helpful.

Can buy from pod your reef or something.

They seem to have great reviews. Will order and couple different ones and put some on display and some in sump.

I've cultured tigger pods (among others) for over a year, they reproduce very easily here, so I can confirm 100% that at least Canadian pods are not sterile.

I don’t know about the whole sterile thing but the temp issue sounds more reasonable. I know @hollback sells pods but not sure what kind. I’ve never ordered but have never heard anything bad

I have a tigriopus species that was collected in the Caribbean in 2004. I’ve had the same cultures going ever since!

The Ocean Nutrition Tiger Pods are not sterile. There are two reasons copepods don’t heavily reproduce in a reef system.

1. Population is constantly being reduced. Copepods are the bottom of the food chain in a closed system and everything eats them faster than they can reproduce.

2. Sterile and vastness. Our reef tanks are actually too sterile of an environment for pods to reach dense populations. Also people tend to add a minimal amount of copepods to a huge water volume where they can’t find each other to reproduce.

Culturing them in a separate system allows you to get the nutrients to a level where they breed like crazy but you couldn’t keep corals alive. It also allows you to use a minimal water volume.

I keep hearing from different fish store owners in my state that the tigger pods by reef nutrition are sterilized for the sole purpose of you always having to buy their pods and they won’t reproduce.

Is this true? If so what pods do you guys get to seed refugiums? I have a mandarin and a wrasse who hammer the pod population constantly so I’m looking for something that I can feed and have them reproduce instead of just dumping a really expensive bottle of pods that will only have one lifecycle.

Thanks!
That is absolutely false and quite disturbing to hear. I can't even imagine how we would go about doing that. I culture the copepods at Reef Nutrition and I can tell you, without a doubt, that we do not sterilize our copepods or any other live feed organism we work with. Sounds like people are making up reasons why Tigger-Pods won't populate a reef tank.

So sorry that you even had to post this question. But, I'm thankful you did so that I can address this.

Regarding temperature. We culture our Tigger-Pods (Tigriopus californicus) year-round in the San Jose, CA area. They are grown in greenhouses with no climate control. Our building temperatures reach the low 100's in the summer months. Water temperature in the cultures sometimes exceeds 85F. With all this, we have no production disruptions or seasonality issues. Proof of this is availability: you can buy Tigger-Pods all year round.

If anyone has questions about our live feeds, or anything else regarding our product line, don't hesitate to tag me so that I can jump in on these discussions before too much conjecture. It's my pleasure to be on here and I look forward to answering anyone's questions no matter how ridiculous. ;)

I couldn’t believe it when I heard it but glad you guys cleared that up for us, not sure why they’d say something like this and lose out on business to their fish store but also to reef nutrition.

Yes; it's rather baffling. Motives can sometimes be hard to ascertain!

Not true lol. The reason you have to keep buying tigger pods is that tigger pods are easily eaten at all stages of life making it hard to establish in a tank.

This is exactly what we tell to people that ask about their ability to populate a tank. It's also one of the reasons why we came out with Apex-Pods. They are much smaller, less conspicuous and reproduce much faster than Tigger-Pods. They are similar to the Tisbe sp. of copepods that others sell.
