Has the name thing gotten to you? Is it so bad that you will only buy a coral if it has a cool sounding common name? Maybe it's just me but it seems EVERY vendor is giving names to their cherry corals these day. Maybe it's only me but what prompted me to post this was a post in a vendor forum where a person asked for the names of some maricultured corals. The colors and prices speak for themselves for me. I'd like to see what other R2R members feel. So will you shell out the big bucks for multicolored chalice or does it have to be a purple galaxy chalice. Let's try and keep this to a poll only. As there's several threads on naming corals I'm sure.

Can you add an option that says "I won't pay extremely high prices no matter what the name or color of coral"? Coining things with Rare, Ultra, Sexy, Super Colored, etc is marketing and marketing alone. Until stuff comes down in price, I don't need it in my tank whether it's a Crazy Fox or an overpriced colorful coral. Just my .02, but I buy what I like as long as it's affordable...

yea I think those two are a little too black and white. I fall sort of in between. Plus most of the nicely colored corals I've seen are named.

i think most people would rather buy something if it has a name to it, but what i do is if i really like what the coral looks like then i'll get it and not care what its called. The name just drives up the price and makes it sell quicker.

I buy what I like. It just so happens that most of what I like is named. But I do have some corals that aren't named that I bought because they looked cool. So I guess I'm somewhere in the middle.

the only reason I like named corals is because of lighting it really throws me off when looking at stuff with the named stuff I can look it up to see it under similar lighting as my own so I will know how it will look I have bought unnamed coral that I really liked only to have it look different in my tank also I can research it to see where it needs to go in my tank what it care it needs etc. I don't buy anything because of hyped up names

Lineage can be nice when selling things, but so much today is about photoshopping and 20k bulbs it kinda makes you sick.

This is one reason I like fosters DD, the corals might not look that insane, but you know exactly what you are getting, and they tell you the lighting that it is under as well.

Names will be given to corals that are established by big retailers...they give nice names, and big price tags to the nicest corals. So...names matter, but if I see something I like I will still buy it.

same here i like unnamed stuff. cheap and looks better than some "named" corals. There are some "named" for sure that i'm planning on picking up tho. for example WWC SOTR Milli or Tierra de fuego.

i buy what i like and i like what i buy..;)

+1

also if you only buy named stuff your limiting yourself alot.
at the same time if you buy a coral because its named, well your not going to be happy with it eventually

If it looks good, it looks good...... if you're asking if I'd rather buy a sweet looking NOID colony or an equally good looking named 1-polyp frag for the same price, I'm going with the NOID.

if i like it i buy it as long as i can afford it name or no name. names make it easier to find certain corals

i buy what i like and i like what i buy..;)

same here i feel like the corals i like are nice enough to re sell if it grows fast enough. I would NEVER buy a chalice i didnt like just so i could propagate and sell and i dont see people who do so a true hobbyist.

My favorite coral in my tank is a slow growing hitch-hiker zoa.... I've had the rock in my tank since I started over a year ago n I have 3 polyps.... Also my dad "Steve&mari" has some frags he got at a swap for 5$ and they rival high dollar corals in color and brightness on his frag rack... But on the flip side of the coin so many corals have names now that its hard to find things that someone hasn't slapped a name on to make a sale... I have even seen someone on a local forum trying to give away some no name green palys to beginners n nobody responded... He changed the title of his thread n made up a fancy name and got tons of responses right away..

I stopped naming my Zoas and I saw a drop in sales. The orders that did come in all were followed up with an email asking for names.

Love it or hate it... Names are here to stay.

I miss the days when corals were named what they were for instance acropora yongi or paly, zoanthid blue mushroom etc. They were cheaper and less bickering over the name game lol but yep now there's names and with them come come collectors and collector prices but I have more no name corals in my tank that usually get noticed long before the namers do!!

I think the question should be "Would you buy non designer named corals?" technically all corals everyone buys has a name, or have you ever bought a coral labled coral 50$ :ooh: ....LOL:horse:
