Nano docile fish mid-water choices?

Here is a picture of my little panda. He’s pretty cute.

Sorry bud, know you took good care

Pajama's are hardy fish. I had one live through 3 moves, a tank upgrade and recently died at at least a 14 years old (2006 - 2020)
Wow!
Sorry for the loss but if I’m correct they typically only live a fraction of that, so very good job!

And this is a big part of what I have had to learn the hard way. LFS workers are great, but frequently give really bad advice, at least to me. I had one suggest a diamond goby for my wife with a 30 gallon oolite bottom tank, a mandarin to me with a 16 gallon, a neon dottyback the same day I got the panda goby, and they assured me that the panda goby was just like the regular clown gobies, only smaller.
Man... I'm so glad I'm on a first name basis with the owner of my fav LFS - and he has a marine science degree. He'll refuse to sell people things if he knows they'd be incompatible with their tank/current livestock/experience level. :)

Some people get offended if the LFS refuse to sell them something, or want to make sure the water parameters are right before agreeing to sell, but I agree with you. I appreciate when they do so and tell me why. I then gladly wait until my tank is ready for it, I want to avoid unnecessary problems with my fish.

Exactly! It's a great way to learn when you get an in person explanation.

Sorry about your panda. They are unique fish.

I also like the Hectors Goby (randfordi). Masked gobies are great and you can have multiples. Mine will swim around my 40g even.
A smaller damsel would be pretty. I love the Azure and Talbots. Really want Smithii though.
I love the cardinals on Biota (yellow, seales).

I didn’t actually know that - Thought they were a heavy Randalli pairing genus. I’ve actually found “pistol shrimp” gobies will only pair with the shrimp they’re found pairing with in the wild. So stonogobiops will only pair with A. randalli and Cryptocentrus will prefer to pair with the tigers.
If that were true you'd see way more species of pistols in the hobby. I've seen Wheeler's', orange-spot watchmans, yellows, Randall's', and even Yashas and yellow-rose/antenna gobies all pair with tiger pistols of varying sizes. I've also seen the big gobies pair with "big" A. randalli. I think it's more of a size thing than anything. The only species I see consistently paired with their "natural" shrimp are the white-cap gobies, and I've always wondered if that's just for the novelty or nobody tries pairing them with others. I wouldn't be super shocked if I saw a white-cap goby pair with an A. randalli.

A sad update yesterday. Unfortunately, the little panda sumped himself overnight and we found him dead. I really hate that. Nothing was picking on him and he seemed healthy but he got into the back chamber and didn't make it out. Finding Nemo was a lie...
Sorry about the panda, those are hard to keep. That pic looked like he had a pretty skinny stomach, which unfortunately isn't a shock for a lot of coral gobies. Hard to get them enough of the right tiny foods to sustain them.

It’ve been told that the white cap gobies are the gobies that only pair with one pistol shrimp. It also makes sense as they are only ever sold in pistol/goby pairs with that specific species.
I personally wont pair my yasha with a pistol shrimp for now - I have a few smaller gobies that could be seen as food. But even if I did I’d prefer to try have him with the shrimp he’s found with in the wild instead of a larger shrimp that’s normally found with Cryptocentrus.
