Humble beginnings (Aug 2008):

Simple little 12g Cadlights AIO nano...pump, heater, DIY 'Complete Spectrum' wide-spread LED array, live rock/live sand (no mechanical/chemical filtration), DIY gravity-fed ATOs, 5% weekly water changes (1/4g, 2x/wk). Only additives are Kalkwasser (added to the ATOs), magnesium 2x/mo and a few drops of Iodine/wk. Easy-breezy to service and maintain.

Thanks a lot. Since most of the frags I started with were smaller than a fingernail (and lighting is a very modest 28W) it'll take a few more years to completely fill out.

Thanks, Darwin. Yeah, your 'teal with yellow' Yuma is doing fine. Slowly worked it into an area with direct lighting and its doing fine.

Thanks! There is very little algae growth, so it usually requires cleaning only once a week.

I really enjoy these smaller tanks (used to have a 50g). When I started this tank I had simplicity in mind as well as efficiency (the cost in electricity is less than $50.00/year).

Tanks that people tend to keep running longest are those that have the least headaches/frustrations...and don't break the bank

The fifty bucks a year has to be a big relief. I would love to only have to pay that for my tank
Im excited to start my own when I get my own house. I am unfortunately in college, and don't have my own house yet. Maybe after med-school I will start one up

Seems like a tanks energy costs go up exponentially with volume. I've seen a lot of college students with Pico or small Nano tanks. Great stress-relief from all that studying!

Lol yes it is. Last year I had a 20g but I had to bring it home for winter vacation, then back up after . Then when summer started I had to bring it home again. It was too much lol.

I've run this tank for the last year without fish or inverts and that was okay, but it needed a bit of livening up. So, without further ado, the new stars of the show:

Red Headed Goby ((Elacatinus puncticulatus)

Barnacle Blenny (Acanthemblemaria macrospilus)

I also bought a very richly colored and healthy Pygmy Angel today, but it won't pose for pics just yet. These are always a bit risky for a reef tank, but since I've always likened them a lot I'm going to give it a try.
