Natural Seawater

I started my tank with water from here. This is the East River next to Manhattan. Probably not the best water. I don't take it from there any more but I do get it from the Atlantic ocean. My tank is maybe 5 0r 10% NSW as it is heavy. If it were not so heavy I would use all NSW because it is just better. Remember all of our fish and corals came from NSW and none of them came from ASW. Think about that.

Now I take it from here.

I would advise against the use of water from the ocean. Although it may be a pain to go and buy salt it's worth it. When you get water out of the ocean you don't know what's in it. There could be chemicals from human polution and bad bacterias. Both of which could potentially wipe out your tank. When you make your own you know exactly what goes into the water and where it all came from.
I'll bet more people's tanks are wiped out by bad salt mix and or wrong mixtures than nsw. In my opinion newbys should be advised to start out using. Probably going to get flamed for this but I'm a believer that the only haters of nsw are the ones who have never used it.

I used it, and I dont have any problem. Just check the alkalinity parameter, and try to collect 35 to 50 milles from the board. I hade better results in colors and growth with the corals and live stock.

Why on earth do people say DON'T use seawater because of pollutants etc. The fish corals etc all survive in the oceans. It's their NATURAL habitat for gods sake.
I collect my water and leave it overnight for the sand/silt to settle then syphon it into my tanks. I don't test it or heat it . I turn my skimmer off for a few days so that all the goodness isn't taken out.I keep it for up to a month. I take a sample from my tanks to my lfs every so often and it always tests ok.
My fish and corals love it. There are more people in my area of the UK changing over to NSW because they're seeing the benefits of using it.

I go out here about up to my knees with a bucket. Is that OK?

Location, location, location , is what it all Boils down to. If you have a natural clean source, that is convenient for you to get and lug home then it's for you, but remember it's a commitment at least once a month, cause I wouldn't store it for multiple water changes. All the LFS in Miami have natural sea water, some people down here use it, others don't. I've been using NSW for 25 years! I don't use the LFS water though, I collect my own. Most times out on my boat right over the reef 6+ miles out, or when I cant get out, at the same place where the salt water delivery truck collects on incoming tide.
