Btw... This is a pic I just took from my deck. No storm yet.. It's relatively calm right now.
You have some nice clean water up there by the inlet to Destin FL, I would most likley collect above Tampa area. There is a beach that has blue water there

What about the clarity of the water? U guys using gfo and carbon? So if I collect the water and then store it in a brute can with a circulation pump I would need to wait how long til I can do a water change? Should I start of slow like maybe 5% and increase from there?

Another friend, not the photos earlier, collects 6000 liters at a time and has it sat in his garage with circulation pumps.
He hasn't had any problems so far and that lasts him months!
Dose he stir it?

I haven't started using yet but I think it depends on where and when you collect. I have heard people using it right away and people who have to wait for the sediment to settle

I don't use carbon or anything else. I walk out a few feet, fill a bucket, warm it up and dump it in. Then I have a glass of Merlot and go about my business. All your fish came from NSW, none of them came from ASW

For the people who store your salt water. (I do it for convince) do you have the container sealed? Any pumps running? Air stones?
I have mine in a 44 gallon brute trash can with a circulation pump. I have the top sealed on. The water itself Dosnt smell when I take it out but when I open the brute it smells a little like mildew. Not super bad but it's there. It has been filled for about 2 weeks with water from Scripps.
Also what are you guys ideas about keeping live rock in your storage containers? I think it might help establish and keep beneficial bacteria.

I live in Destin FL. I get soooooo nervous about pulling water from the gulf that I haven't done it yet! I would love to use the NSW being I live on the water and can collect it easily. I'm just scared there will be pollutants that will crash my tank. Those of us that us NSW, do run GFO and Carbon ect... Also the water here in the summer heats to about 85-89 degrees and my reef is stable at 77 degrees with my chiller. Would this cause a major issue? I'd really love to hear from others in the area and more info on using NSW from people ACTUALLY using it rather than peoples opinions that aren't using it!!
I live in Mary Easter and collect my water between Navarre and Pensacola where there is lil run off and Lil boat use. Plus it's the shortest distance from my car to beach to log buckets back from. I have just set up my tank 2months ago and everything is testing fine and crystal clear after my cycle finished. I even had a small mushroom polyp on one of the live rocks I put in when I started my cycle and it made it thru the cycle and has tripled in size in last month. I am changing 10% every two weeks. Santa Rosa island is probably one of the best places you can collect from since it has the sound between it to catch all the run off so it is pretty much perfect gulf of Mexico nsw.

It is beautiful water there but there is lots of boat traffic in and near the inlet, would be better to collect from the island.

I will try that then.

Where exactly? Somewhat new here... Military :)
I'm in Niceville so if I go to the Mary Ester cutoff on my to Navarr can I collect by hurlburt? I was thinking of collecting straight down mid bay bridge into Destin where it dead ends at crystal beach?

also... can I go take that water then come home and do a 5 gal water change or do I need to do anything to the water first??

My big question is how long will the water store. If I am changing 16 gallons 60.5 liters a month and I have 100 gallons 378 liters on hand how long will that last being stored. It seem that most who are using the NSW are closer that an hour from the ocean and just can pretty much run down and grab what they need. I would also say with NSW one would not have to dose the trace elements or as much using NSW.

The longest I've stored nsw is about 2-2 1/2 months (closed containers no pumps or circulation). Would store more for longer if I had more containers

I collect it and store it in an open plastic garbage can with no circulation for as long as I need to. An hour or a year, it doesn't matter as it is billions of years old anyway.

Nice thanks. Makes sense. How do you think that effects natural stains of bacteria in the water?

Thank you for the relay

make sure you clean the buckets. The must or mold sholdnt grow in the salt its likely condensation on the lid. i do a light water bleach spray and tap rinse.

I think it would be fine to collect from Crystal beach. You could take the cut off to 98 when you get to Navarre you would turn on to the island, go over the bridge and anywhere on the beach there is a good spot.
