Near disaster partialy averted tonight.

Instead of covering just the emergency drain, how bout cover the entire rectangular weir to keep everybody out?
Yea I think I'm going to do that for sure. I bought some screen last night I just have to fund a good way to attach it or create a frame.

I would make a frame, just due to the fact that it'd be a pain to have to scrape off the silicone and mesh when you need to siphon the overflow (cleaning), or have a replumb or adjustment to make.

I’m so sorry to hear this. Equipment is never meant to last forever and the fact that you’ve had the same tank up and running for 12 years is impressive. But it’s not a matter of what if something breaks/if the power goes out it’s a matter of when and are you prepared.
This wasnt an equipment issue. This was a freak incident.

Like most said a screen over emergency drain and possible a separate screen over the overflow to try to keep inhabitants out of the overflow area.

I misunderstood the post.

That is the issue this ran for 12 years just fine then bam waterfall in the kitchen.
Let's face it. Everyone with a sump has the potential for a failure no matter the care taken in design. A cover that has the potential to clog would have kept a fish out and prevented this clog. One failure in 12 years is really good. Hope you find a good fix.
