I have been adjusting the tightness of the fitting and the pipe. As one goes upwards it needs to be a little tighter.
I love thinking about this kind of problem. Brings be back to the days when I was making different types of skimmers 30 years when we didn't have all these china made skimmers.

I making stuff that is out of the box DIY wise.

No David I have built some many things down thru my maintenance career you just know. I bought the fittings from US plastic's 1- each of T's, 45 elbows, 90 elbow and cap in schedule 40 gray PVC. The pipe is PVC conduit I bought at Home Depot for $1.95 for 10 foot length.

If you live in a large city you might be able to get these fittings locally. I didn't buy it locally because I wanted to let everyone in on the fun.
Also the top link is to the gray PVC 1/2 pipe it might be the darker PVC like the fittings but I don't know I just bought the fittings.

Update made up the PVC cap's. Used a 3/8 drill bit and then a rat tail file to get the size for my frag plugs. The plugs fit nice tight so the corals will not fall off. I will be installing the system next week on my vacation.

I would agree with you on this one. There is some beautiful pieces here and arranged amazing but why go for a living natural Reef and load it up with PVC?? For frag tank it's a great idea but not for display juts my opinion. On another note what size tank is this it does not look very big with that Achilles and purple tang? Oh and I should add beautiful fish and colors.

Interesting idea that could definitely be improved on. Changing up the spacing, using 45's and such would make this look better. Still a very sterile look, but can really show off some corals.

interested to see how this turns out. definitely an interesting idea. My current DT is something similar but with rock and I covered the pvc I used with sand.

What I have found over the years is I like to adjust the aquascape to suit the corals growth. I want maximum adjustment and really the corals are the stars of the tank. Dark gray PVC disappears in the Aqurium. That's why this will look nothing like the tank in the video. Going for a tonga rock look old acropora sticks but easy to take apart and if one gets bubble algae or aptasia on the pvc pieces they can be replaced and cleaned. Right now I have a dark gray ceramic system I had made you don't even see it in the tank.
