Need advice!

I will be really curious to see if you see an improvement with more frequent water changes, sometimes I have to wonder if wc feed the growth, guess we'll see.
yea, esp if its using a mineral like diatoms do.
in many cases the adage the solution is dilution works like with high No, in this case it's actually dosing.
worth noting the results after a WC

I've been dealing with this same thing since late May/early June. I've been unable to ID it. I think I had twilliard and Russ ID it with a scope, with no success. I wrote it off as "clear" diatoms lol. That may be incorrect, however my astrea snails munch on it sometimes. There is one spot, the size of a half dollar, that was eaten completely off. That one spot has never regrown. Which makes me wonder if I don't need another 10 snails. Here is some pictures taken back in June.

The only change I've had since these images are the rocks have turned a darker brown, with cyano and some hair algae in some areas. It blows of fairly easy with a turkey baster, but leaves behind a slimy surface which grows back to the above images. Like I said though, the spot where the snails ate, hasn't regrown. So... I don't know.. It also only grows where the light shines.

normal params I assume too. Do you notice any change after WC?

And an odd question for you and @MCFish23 what part of the country are you in?

We sure will! It appears to be better then it was but only time will tell. I made sure to change out all Rodi filters. So I'm using the best water I have.

I had elevated PO4. Most likely due to a couple turbos and a firefish dying. That has been months now. Today, PO4 is under control. In fact I tested today showing 0.01. However, I still have some cyano growing. So that number may be off some. I'm not running any chemical filters or carbon. Only sponge, matrix, and skimming. In the last two weeks, skimming has been very minimal. I was performing 25% water changes every week for the last four months without change. I now have reduced to 5% and are now seeing more hair algae growing. I've associated this with new tank 'woes'. Cyano still persists but I've reduce bright lights to 6 hours from 8 hours. I'm considering going to 4 hours.

Keep in mind I have another tank, not even 3 feet away without any of these symptoms. I'm not sure if region would be a factor. Both tanks are topped off with same RO/DI water. And same salt mix for water changes. FWIW I live in the mid-west.

I'm also from Midwest. Going to test Phosphate later tonight. All other parameters have been good

I see little change after a water change. It doesn't get worse though which is good! I see more change when I really scrape at the rock with a brush. I usually see my filter socks clogged soon after

@MCFish23 What kind of rock did you use?
It was purchased from BRS. I used this same rock in my old 55. I had algae issues because I was away at college. I ended up letting it dry out and tried cooking it in bins. I wish now I would have just went and bought new. Lesson learned I guess

Yup. that.

I ask about region as all the truly UGLY Dinos and invasive things seem to come from around the gulf coast virginia to LA and texas coast.. This is from reading here and other forums and my own local one. We here actually seem to have very very few diatom probs as well.

curious.

Well, that is ironic because my rock came from BRS. Mine is the BRS reef saver dry rock.

I wanted to mention mine seems to only grow on the rocks where the lights hit them as well

I thought I had a dino issue at one point. I was dosing Malefix with twilliard during the "dino cure trial". Never did make a dent.

I definitely have some reef saver in there but I have other typesas well. All from BRS
Are you using an ATO and how big is the reservoir? I was running a 5 gallon reservoir that was extremely convenient however it came with a hefty po4 price. The RO/DI water was sitting in the reservoir for longer than it should and I was basically dosing/topping off with po4 water. I've now reduced my reservoir to 1.5 gallons and have seen much slower growth in cyano.

Edit: I should have mentioned this earlier >.<!!! Helps to talk this out, though.

I use a 5 gallon bucket with a lid that sits under my tank for ATO. Usually have to fill it once a week. Definitely something I need to look into!!

If you HAVE to refill a 5 gallon bucket every week, most likely isn't going to be an issue for you. My 5 gallons was lasting me 3 weeks or more lol.. Wouldn't hurt to check for po4, though.

Mc Fish from your pics I had the same stuff. Does it grow under the rocks in the shade? Believe me Friend when I say " Sorry for You troubles ! " I couldn't get rid of it for nothing. Drove me nut's ! I ended up tearing the tank down due to a leak. All I have left is the rock which has been cooking since 4th of July. I " pray" that kills it. You guys think a good 3 month plus of cooking in the total dark will kill it? Reason I ask about the dark is it didn't grow under the rock where there was little light. I can dose with peroxide as well following method for treating per dinno's?
Good Luck MC Fish . I hope you beat this evil stuff and thanks for allowing me to jump in !

Thanks! I hope I beat it too. It's been frustrating to say the least..

I hope cooking it kills it for you!

If I had to do it again I would spend the money to buy new dry rock!

Corals and livestock has improved greatly since pulling the plug early using the Dr Tims

MCFish23 did you have adverse effects using the Dr Tim's Waste Away? I have purchased a couple of bottles with the hope that your regime was successful.
Looking more at the your issue I think I may have (had) something different. I had white snotty strands growing in my sump. I purchased the Dr Tim's Waste Away as it seemed to work on other folks with a similar issue, but for the last 2 weeks it has gone away on its own. I was thinking was using the Waste Away anyway as a general maintenance supplement, but not if puts my livestock to any unnecessary risk. Good luck.

Not the best picture...the white stuff grew mostly on my filter sock...
