Definitely looks like a parrot. Possibly immature Scarus ghobban with that face shape and pattern. Ill try to remember to look in the big book later and see if I like any other species for ID.
Thank You, Its certainly not the Fish I ordered though interesting in its own right. No idea what I’ll be able to do with a Parrot. Can’t imagine there’s many folks/stores that would take him.

Lots of people with fish only would take him, I would think. What did you order that he got mistaken for?

Yes im hoping the LFS will take him as Im not holding out much hope for the vendor i got him from. Im giving them a chance to rectify it but so far ive received no replies to my inquiries.

Was supposed to be Temmincks Fairy Super Male. Not even close!

The indentation on the face above the mouth as well. It only seems to be well defined in a handful of Scarus at this size.

Can you tell the shape of the caudal fin. The Scarus genus boasts a large diversity in caudal shapes and might help me narrow it down a bit. The downturn of the end of the band under the eye might also be significant as the eye banding appears common in this genus.

juvenile female princess or stoplight parrot. females are less colorful

In my personal opinion its defiantly not what you ordered and the mouth is a tell tale sign. That mouth is made to crush coral and other stony bits looking for polyps........Where did you order this from that was stupid enough to think they would get away with this????....and again in my personal opinion the people who sold it to you are either really stupid and don't know fish or anything else, or they knew what they were doing and are trying to call you to stupid to know any better....either way I wouldn't order from them again, specially if its this much trouble for them to send a paying customer what they bought instead of trying to bs someone with something they didn't know about themselves.............also I am willing to bet that when you ask them they will claim the mistake was on there side to keep from getting you upset and I find that to be a very positive sign there playing you.....no one mistakes a mouth of a coral eating fish and its hard beak for one that wont eat coral.....Also as mentioned above about a LFS taking it or, another mention on how "some fish only tanks" will want them is probably a really good reason why they played you....they couldn't sell it and it was probably given to them by mistake so they passed it on to rid themselves of it..........If not then the place you bought from has really dumb people, and they should not be working for a trade that ships animals they cant identify.

Please list the name of this seller so we can avoid them or use major caution when dealing with them.

some intersting begavior. I added some algae pellets and obeserved the fish eating. He/she does some barrel rolls here and there to turn up the pellets before munching.

So far this is the best clip ive been able to get since yesterday showing markings and fins. The fish isnt quite ready to strut the runway and sticking under the ledges.

You may be right, you may be wrong.... Ive contacted them to work it out and will post in the appropriate place when the time comes.

For sure, sometimes like being wrong as it helps in the learning process, but if I was wrong it might be only about the place that sold it to you not the fish. That mouth and you have it on film snapping shut, thats how they go up to corals and bite pieces off. Also fish that nip and eat at polyps including parrot fish will eat algae as part of there diet, so dont let that thing fool you.

In reguards to the place that sold it to you, I hope im wrong because I dont want to know people do that to people but I know they do and have seen it done first hand as I have worked in the trade. I'd get so upset when they would sell people things they had no idea about or sold them something because they could not because it was what the customer wanted or needed. Sending through the mail makes this easier.....anyway again I hope im wrong because I still want to be able to order fish from online places without worry that I'm gonna end up with a grouper for my reef tank when I ordered a clown fish pair.

As for the way your waiting on there reply to state any names and what not, well I respect you for that and the way in which you want to handle it. I will be waiting patiently for the reply as I still wanna know who this was that did this to you....I hope they take care of you.

First, although all parrotfish have beaks, _not_ all parrotfish devour corals like holiday candy.

This guy _may_ be a transitional Scarus iseri, commonly called "striped parrotfish", a small, rather common Caribbean species. There are aspects of it that seem a bit "off" for iseri, but those guys can take on a lot of different looks. S. iseri feeds primarily on algae, but is likely to want more room than a Cirrhilabrus temmincki, the fish you ordered - and may become quite a bit more aggressive. I had a striped parrotfish for a little while, and though I enjoyed the fish, I found that he wasn't safe around fairy wrasses, and that he would attack them with a remarkably persistent vengeance.

If your tank is big enough to house a small parrotfish, I'd personally suggest Scarus quoyi, the Quoy's parrot. Beautifully colored, stays a nice size for the home aquarium, and studiously avoids any and all corals while chewing just about every type of algae from the rock.

I just stated parrott fish will nip at corals and eat at coral never said anything about eating it like candy. Parrott fish have these beaks for crushing rock and coral most the time dead coral, to get at the food on the rocks and coral they are after including algae. I wouldnt put this in a reef tank because of that is all I was saying about the fish.

Thanks Bruce! Interesting species for sure. Ive never really looked at Parrots until the past couple days and Ive enjoyed watching this one but not something id consider keeping long term. He has been eating algae off the rockwork for sure and ive seen him take quite a few mouth fulls of sand but hasnt even looked at the digi frags.

I was wondering how healthy the fish actually was based on the early going but i now think its just fine and had a very rough trip.

It is the first fish ive put in this tank that the candy hogfish hasnt tormented so maybe on the brightside he teaches the hog how to play with others and gives the very young tank a good cleaning while he spends a few nights with us :)

Here he is cleaning up his temp housing. Added music simply to block out the TV in the background.
