so I started cycling my redsea reefer today an I'm fairly unhappy with the noise my return pump makes not sure if that's normal and I have to get over it or are there other options for quiet pumps any input is much appreciated thank-you

Should be pretty darned quiet. I'd at least touch base with whoever your RedSea dealer was and get their feedback. Have you removed and cleaned the pump yet?

Are you saying it's not a new Reefer, so the pump isn't from RedSea?

Either way, then definitely give it a cleaning and see what you can see. Shouldn't be hard to refurb and get it running more quietly.

Check out a Sicce or Eheim if you want quieter than quiet. Mag would be another great option...very heavy duty and also quiet.

no the pump is brand new just bought a few days ago I'll definitely look into ehiem sounds like a good pump

???

Not to dissuade you from switching pumps if you want, but I'm confused.

If you bought something new and it's noisy, contact who you bought it from or the manufacturer. That's a defect. :)

well I wasn't sure if it was a defect or just a poorly built pump figuring just like anything in life there is better quality brands it's not extremely loud just not as quiet as I would like I would like something a bit better

No doubt there are definitely better brands, but any little magnetic drive pump should be almost silent. It's the bigger ones where build counts a lot more.

Again, not to dissuade you if you want another brand, but...

First, I'd totally disassemble the pomp and clean it and see if that makes any difference.

Second, if it's still noisy, contact your dealer or contact RedSea directly. They'd want to know.

Third, if RedSea and company leave you with a noisy pump then upgrade to what you want.

:)

Not sure your application can use external but i got a used iwaki and i love that thing quiet and dependable

ok I'll give it a shot tomorrow for dissembling it and see what happens I'm in the other room and I can hear it it's driving me nuts

Hi mcarroll, the reefer series don't come with any pumps. You must be thinking of the Max series. The reefer is nice because the owner gets to pick out and purchase all pumps, skimmers, lights, etc. from whatever manufacturer and vendor they please.:)

I have the reefer 350 and use the ehiem compact +3000. It is very quiet. The only downside to the ehiem is the flimsy suction cup supports. I broke the support the second time I remove the pump for cleaning. Now I have to hold the pieces in place when I put the pump back in the sump.

lol yea I was trying to say the pump was not a red sea product sorry for the confusion but the ehiem pumps sound like there nice if this one does not work out

Hi Williamthefr88, I know this is the 3rd time I have posted on your thread in the last 5 minutes. Lol. I got to thinking about it and wanted to make sure the sound you are hearing isn't the air in the down pipe. Mine took a few days to adjust so that I wasn't hearing air and water going down it or having the water run over the second overflow down pipe. The big knob that you adjust it with is VERY touchy. On mine a minute turn makes a big difference. I'm talking about a half a notch.

I know what your talking about that can be a bit loud to but I have been messing with it and trying to get it down. The pump makes a humming noise and every few minutes another noise like it works harder and takes more water it's hard to describe
