Need recommendations for return pump

Almost sounds like your pump is cavitating. Are you sure the pump is designed to work at the depth/head you have it set up for? Otherwise if it is cavitating, that could be a sign of a damaged impeller.

it's what the guy at the fish store recommend to me but I am going to take the pump out tonight and take a look at it

William, just want to make sure I understand your setup correctly. You have the pump inside your sump, correct? That pump can be used both inside the sump or outside with the suction connected via piping. If it is outside the sump that opens up a bunch of other possible issues.

If it is in the sump, you don't have anything that would restrict flow through the pump on the inlet side, do you?

It is a in sump pump no nothing is restring flow

I've used a lot of pumps, as I like a dead silent tank. Currently I'm using all sicce/tunze pumps, including the skimmer. Others I've tried are mag, rio, reef octopus, quiet one, ehiem 1262, and a number of Jaboa DC pumps (although not their newest one which is suppose to be nearly silent). In terms of energy efficiency, silence, and reliability the sicce pumps won, but you can still hear them.

Thanks for the recommendation

I own the RS Reefer 350 and use the new Jebao DCT8000 which is a very affordable DC Pump. I've been running it for about 8 months steadily and it is dead silent. I'm using a Bubble Magus skimmer that makes way more noise, so I'm looking to replace it, and that downpipe needs adjusting all the time. I have the most trouble right after water changes, but usually get it under control after a while. I think they should consider a redesign of that system...imho....

Yea I'm having a hard time with my over flow noise to I'm not to sure how to adjust that to make it more silent

Turn the knob clockwise to raise the water level for the downpipe. Turn it counter clockwise to lower the water level if it starts to go over the overflow pipe. Turn it just one notch or 1/2 notch at a time and let it sit a few before adjusting any more. If it is noisy, it sounds like you need to turn it clockwise.

Awesome thanks for the advice I'm about to do it right now

Glad to know it made a difference! No more sucking sound. The next step is over the next few days make sure it isn't running over the overflow pipe. If you see it creep over, turn the knob counter clockwise. You may have to fiddle with it for awhile. Then it will stay fairly consistent. I have to adjust mine every now and then. Sometimes after a water change. Once you get used to how touchy it is, you will get the hang of it. It is quiet once it is adjusted.

got the ehiem pump today wrote what a difference I can barely here the tank standing a couple of feet a way beautiful pump
