Over the last few days (week) I have lost 3 of my stock. 2 blue green Chromis (within a day of each other) and today I found an emerald crab dead. I shock my water levels weekly and all seem to be doing fine. Feed daily and sometimes twice. The strangest part was when I pulled the emerald crab out, it was immersed in a clear gel! Last week I added some new coral that i cleaned using Revive and 1 new fish. Everyone else is doing great! Any ideas?

When you say you "shock" your water levels.... is that a typo and you meant to say you "test" your water levels?
I promise everybody will ask for the actual numbers of each of the tests you have along with tank stats. Size, filtration, water change frequency ect.

Yes. Lol! It is supposed to say check. Sg 1.025, nitrate 20 (little high), calcium 500, alkalinity 10, nitrite 0, temp 77. Tank size is 30 gal, filtration is the standard pump with a filter and spillway. Water change is on a weekly basis right now with the Nitrates being high.

was there any signs of illness on the fish that died? any aggression between the fish? How were they acclimated? Looking for clues

No aggression from or towards any other fish. They all seem to get along fine. The Chromis seemed to stay in the corner of the tank towards the end. When the first Chromis died the other stuck by the body until I pulled him out, the other started doing the same thing. Kept going with the current. Not swimming, just blowing around. He got caught in the vent a few times and then I pulled him out and he died a few hours later. With the crab he was running all over the tank last night doing crab things. Today he looked like he was in a rock Chillen but I noticed the gel and realized he was dead.

Chromis are an odd fish. They will perish with no reason.
When I want 5 in my tank I buy 10
Its common to loose 50% of chromis introduced.
I think the emerald was a loss either to acclamation or chemistry.
How big was he and how long has he been in the tank?

Heck, we are gunna need a little help. Let me call the [HASHTAG]#reefsquad[/HASHTAG]

HAHA!!! Twillard just knew I was gunna call him!

Both the Chromis and the Emerald were the original crew. They had been in the tank for 6 months. He was probably 1.5" in diameter or so. I still have 2 more emeralds and they seem to be fine.

I would call that the common crab loss.
They will perish from bacterial infections or malnutrition

Lol Meredith ! :-)

hmmmm, not really sure about this. Do you QT at all?

I haven't quarantined before, but I think I need to start. The only fish I have added recently was an Anthia. Do most people set up a second tank to quarantine?

I learned the hard way about not qt and now i have 1 set up in my closet lol i had no other space but it works for now since its an open space :)

So let me ask the next obvious question. How big for the tank, what in the tank, how long, and what chemistry? We have thought about doing a 10g tank in my daughters room and making it a coral tank with some shrimp. Could I use that as a Qt?

QT tanks are easy.
Doesn't have to be large and elaborate
I keep my QT out in the garage. When I get new specimens I take water out of my tank (water change) and put in the QT tank. Flow and a heater with pvc tubes to hide in.
When introduced into the DT I empty the QT

How long to QT?
I do 4 to 6 weeks for fish
I do 1 to 2 weeks for coral (to verify no algaes or unwanted pests)

Chromis will often whittle themselves down to one aka "the winner." ;)

Wow!! could you have a second tank with coral and everything? Just let the fish hangout for a bit.
