I have considered a refugium or algae scrubber!! I have been wanting to implement one into my sump somehow. But I do not have very much room and also am not very good at making things :/ Also, I’m not sure how it would effect the tank being it’s a year old. And adding new equipment sometimes makes me nervous since things are somewhat in order :/

Try one of these: https://www.amazon.com/Marina-Hang-On-Breeding-Box-Large/dp/B005QRDCP2

I use it on my smaller tanks. Its a live-bearer breeder box, but I put about 3 inches of refugium mud and some chato in it with a light. It does require an air pump for water flow. It is small, so yo can probably hang it off of your sump. I did. Works very well.

Thank you!! My first year salt water.. I’m a very ocd person which is dangerous around coral :( haha. I want to go bigger when I buy a house hopefully this year.. I want a 120 fat boy. I know a lot of these corals are going to out grow this tank

Looks like there's a lot of (potential) flow for a tank the size you have. I believe you said you added some flow at about the same time as the water change - could you be more specific on that?

I agree with the previous suggestions - just give it some time. Which is often the hardest thing to do, eh? :-)

No I added more flow “adjusted” a couple weeks ago*** I don’t run my power heads full blast. Because it’s just way to much. I ended up moving around some rock and coral so I could turn them up a bit higher. My torch gets beat on and starts receding with much more flow. I’m sure there’s better way but being so new at the hobby. I would have to have someone show me :/ But everything was fine up until I did this big water change. I’ll give you guys update tomorrow to see if the Merky is any less or more [emoji106][emoji106]

The little power head on the over flow I put back in the tank. And pointed basically right at the cyano on the rock. Just enough to where it wasn’t shifting sand. And it does appear that the cyano has started to disappear.

I’m using fritz right now.
Yep. Make some water.
Don’t change it.
Keep your hands out of the tank.

Take two of these and call me in the morning. :)

So today looks a little less cloudy “calmed nerves” I got 10 gallons here mixed up... I usually change water on sundays. How do you recommended I store it ? I got a pump in there stirring it. Last time I let it go for two days with a pump it built up like a brownish bubbly film almost. And I tossed it. Should I just cover the barrel with no circulation???

That is not a normal reaction for a mixed salt.
I can leave natural seawater from the ocean and instant ocean , and Red Sea for months in my garage.

Interesting.

The water suggestion was to have a standby just in case. But perhaps we’ve stumbled across a little clue.

I’d test the tds of the source water.
Let it sit unstirrwd and and test nitrites in a couple days. Maybe nitrates too.

#reefsquad for some thoughts.

Completely agree, something else is going on.

Once it is dissolved I see no reason to continue circulating. I normally leave mine mixed and closed up for weeks. I'll add a recirc pump a few minutes before I pull some out. I think keeping is covered more would be a good start.

+1

Something else is at play. Salty brings up a good idea of how to go forward. A little effort in tests should help later on.

Maybe you guys mis read, the brown bubbley came from a batch WITH a pump circulating for 3 ish days... the water will reach 90degress. I just figured it was from evaporation . I have tested my batch after a 12-14 hour mix period, and nitrates in it are 0 as well as tds coming out of my rodi..

I mix on Saturday evening change Sunday noonish and my water is usually 78-80 just from the heat of the pump I usually leave a crack to let the gases escape out
