Ok This is what I have. It's a red sea 69g tank. Some lps and sps corals. I have a Yellow tang, Six line, Firefish, Diamond goby, Coral Banded shrimp, Banggai cardinalfish and 2 clowns. What would be a good addition to the tank?

You could add a Tomini surgeonfish they stay small and will get along with your yellow fin.

Maybe something small, if anything at all. Also, I would say a 69 gal is a little cramped for a yellow tang.

Two possible options:

if you can live with a non active swimmer like the Banggai add a Pajama Cardinal.

If you want to add some fun to the tank add an Assessor. They are active swimmers and can swim sideways and upside down.

Was reading on this fish. It say's it is aggressive towards other Tangs.

It's really risky to mix two tangs in a 69 gallon. An established yellow will most likely not take kindly to a new tang.

Tangs absolutely are aggressive to other tangs, even those of a different species. That is strange advice above.

Just curious as to why you say that? I’ve always mixed tangs no problem and know many who have done the same. Is it because of the tank size?

The tank size makes it worse.
Tangs generally compete and you have to be careful of which tang you pair with which other tang. That combination would likely work if you had a much larger tank. At least 100 gal and 6ft long. You could maybe keep the yellow if you got a 5 foot tank but for two I would add the extra area,

Please do not add another tang to this tank and if possible re-home the yellow tang. Then you can get maybe a really pretty wrasse. Many are colorful and quite fun. Yellow Corris wrasse would replace the splash of yellow from the tang.

OP, disregard my last post. I was incorrect about mixing the two tangs. I agree with rehoming the yellow tang.

It has a lot to do with tank size, yes. Adding a single tang to an established single tang in a small aquarium is the worst case scenario.

Multiple tangs can, of course, can be mixed in our tanks. Mixing heterospecifics (different species) makes things easier. Mixing fishes in different genera (not yellow + purple, but yellow + tomini) makes things even better. And some tangs are worse than others.

Of course tank size has to be considered. But a blanket statement that tangs are usually only aggressive to those in the same species is incorrect.

I have a yellow and a tomini in my 65. But, I also only have 2 other fish in there: an African flameback angel and a flame hawk. Everyone gets along perfectly and they have for about 3.5 months since I added the yellow. My tank is basically a cube, so while this conflicts with people saying tangs should be in tanks that are long, my tangs swing all over the place and I feel as though they have plenty of space. There is no pacing or back and forth, etc. All are now really fat and healthy (they were a little skinny when acquired).

I certainly don’t plan to add anything else, except maybe 1 thing that’s small, but we’ll see. I’m happy where I’m at and I love the constant “action” that tangs and Pygmy angels provide.

Ah I understand what you are saying. Forgive me for posting incorrect info, that’s always what I’ve been told by my lfs.

Is there a difference between a yellow and gold Assessor basslett
