Need yall opinion...

Someone’s selling a 150GALLON tank that was resealed last summer for $200. It comes the stand 3 canister filters and and bunch of other stuff. I’m interested but nervous about the tank being resealed last summer. It’s in their garage and they probably won’t fill it so I can see if it holds water. Should I buy and just deal with what comes with it or what y’all think? Want all opinions! Thanks

Probably just as good a chance they really just want to get rid of it which for space or something as they don’t trust it themselves. It’s a risk.

Yea that’s what they said in the description. They need space so they’re selling for a steal.

They do seem honest about it though.

If you intend to use it somewhere it would not matter if it leaked I might offer $100.

Rebuilding a large tank is something I would not attempt myself. I would enlarge my search area and drive up to several hours away and find something better.

There is never anything worthwhile for sale where I live or they want what it would cost new.

Sounds like a great deal.

You have to ask yourself the tradeoffs here:
1) How much will be invested in corals & fish? The higher the invested amount the greater the risk.
2) How much damage would be done to your home if the tanked leaked? May not be too bad if tank is in the garage. Spouse may kill you if tank leaks in living room.

Lol um yea I’d kill myself if I had the tank leak. I’m in a 75G right now. I wasn’t going to switch to the 150G right away anyway. Probably in another 6-8months. I was going to just hold it because it’s such a good price. Between the low supply of tanks and the higher price I thought $200 was a no brainer for a tank, stand, 3 canister filters, and some other stuff.

My question for the seller would be what does reseal mean? Did they disassemble the tank, scrape the glass free of silicone, clean surfaces, then reassemble the tank with new silicone? If yes what type of silicone was used? If they say GE type 1 walk away or consider the tank for scrap glass if you want to reseal properly. If the seller defines reseal as they just put a new layer of silicone on the inside edges then it was not really resealed. I would say if the glass is in good shape that is worth at least $200.

Sometimes people do sell stuff cheap just to get rid of it.

And that’s the thing, some people honestly just want to get rid of things that wrk. I just don’t want to pass this up if it’s a good deal/steal.

for $200 the canister filters alone could recoup most of the expense .

depends on how much room you have or if you’re able to fill it outside before bringing it in . There is always the option of bringing it home and filling to water test .

Based on the information provided, that could be a good deal, but from a risk/reward perspective I would keep looking. Good luck with your search!

Tanks that are only 5 years old generally don't need to be resealed. I'm guessing it's much older than that. I also wouldn't trust anyone resealing a tank, period. There's too much down side involved for me to be comfortable. People get brand new tanks from actual manufacturers that they aren't happy with the sealing job. I just wouldn't trust it without being proven wrong. I'd need to inspect it, know the method and type of silicone used and also see it hold water for a week straight. If I'm not very happy with all of that criteria, I'm not buying it
