Neptune Sky Discontinued?

You just described the Apex - they pushed an update in the last two weeks that is bricking lots of a2s and a3s. But hey we can get a discount on a new one!

For real or just hearsay?

No company supports older products forever, particularly small companies. I’ve been dealing with this for years with a lot of my stereo gear. Manufacturers either went out of business or original parts (mostly ICs) are no longer available. I buy up spares where I can, but otherwise enjoy it for what it does on the day you buy it …. and hope it has a reasonable usable life.

I’ve done that with my Radion G4 Pros. Have a couple of spares in the closet. Same with a non mobius MP40. When Neptune discontinues a module I find useful, I also buy a spare (WXM as example).

Experiencing it right now.

Arent the skys barely 2 years old? I have 2 and never had an issue with them. But i’ve also never seen an apex unit live more than a year. So i’m not optimistic about my investment.

This is news to me as well...

A few diff threads going around here. Latest update is bricking things. Im 100% offline now. For what it’s worth they started emailing me late/after hours to give them access so hopefully a fix is in the works. As long as im made whole im all good. But its been a **** show of a product for me.

Oh I see, I recently updated last week and out of the blue yesterday I get an alert from fusion that my apex is offline.

I had to power cycle it for the 1st time in 6 years, but that brought it back online.

However it didn't brickFusion. All the programs were still being carried out, it just prevented connection via fusion.

That’s because this stuff isn’t an investment …. It’s an expenditure. Don’t really know what to tell you about your apex experience. My classic lasted me 4 years and my A2pro lasted 7 (it still works, but the micro SD card died). The only modules I had early issues with were the 832 where the power supply tended to die. Otherwise I’m still running some of the old black colored ones along with some 10 year old energy bars.

Same here. Black labeled classic lasted some 15 years, probably one of the first units ever sold. I have 4 in use now, 3 orange classics and a an A2 but all running with orange labeled EB4s and EB8s - no EB 832 for me!

Have few spare brains as spares - just in case. They can be bought cheap used if you exercise patience.

I think the trick to stability is the aux power supply connected to battery backup so that every time you have a power flicker the apex doesn't go down.

That said, I too was worried applying the latest update to the A2 last weekend. I always worry about features being quietly removed.

I love my 3 Sky light fixtures on my 280. With fear of them being discontinued and limited stock online, I took advantage of the 12% off offer and ordered a backup unit in case one of mine ever craps out. They are currently in stock at saltwateraquarium.com

I wasn't aware of that. Must have been what happened to mine. I decided to just swap to Hydros. Wasn't a huge fan of Apex in general. Felt like it was charged as a premium product and put together like a toy. The DOS is a great product, but the controller and the Trident felt pretty flimsy and clunky for what they charge.

Mine is 8 years old (2016)...still running....had a Trident since they first came out (won at MACNA 2019)... it's about to get a DIY service kit for the second time.

I will say some of the outlets on the original EB832 are acting up but most of the things I have running are on extra EB8s I had acquired.

I'm not really a Neptune fan boy but when I got mine it was pretty much Apex or Profilux and I didn't like GHL's interface at the time, but maybe I'm an oddball to have it last so long...

I placed an order for three at AquaCave since they showed them in stock but shortly after I placed my order, they called and said they only had two but they should receive the third in a week so I left the order open pending the third light. I just got a call today saying they would not be getting the third light and they were told it was discontinued.

I reached out to BRS and they said that they haven't heard that news yet but they also haven't got any from Neptune for a while now. I have a pending question with Neptune support and a post on the Apex forum but nothing yet... it would be nice to know if they are dead or not. If they are just backordered, I could take the two they have and wait a bit for the third but if its dead, it would be stupid to grab those two.

It’s been two days now with no response from anyone at Neptune on their forum or through a support message I sent off denying the rumor. This doesn’t bode well… it would be so easy to dispel the rumor but the radio silence is essentially confirming it.

It seems like the merger of Neptune and Ecotech may have pushed a solid light out of the market in favor for one with better profit margins and reduced competition in the sector. It’s unfortunate because the Sky was a decent price point for what you get but now the next best alternative is nearly 20% more.

If they do not reply, that is not a good sign! :(

Of all the nepture products I own. Sky has been one of the better ones with the only issue being the weirdness where after a power loss I sometimes have to re-add it back to the apex. It was about the same price as the current gen Ecotech's when i got mine.

I sent a couple follow-up emails to Neptune support and never got a response. Looking at the videos posted from Reefapalooza, there was no Sky in sight - just the radions and blades. I’ve given up on it and have accepted that it’s going to die a slow death.

For what is worth, I too have come to this same conclusion. I have 2 skys, one that half the blues have failed on it. I contacted support back in March 2024 and was told its a hardware issue, but they have not received parts to repair them in over 6 months (late 2023). They offered the Radion discount as previously seen. I then called into support and talked to different reps that said the same. We are currently not repairing them due to no parts to repair, we can add you to a wait list, if we get parts, but HIGHLY suggest moving to a different light. Here in July 2024, Im still using the broken light hoping I could find someone to repair it.
