I am VERY new at this and trying to setup a 125 right now.I was at the meeting yesterday and had a good time and tried to get some advice. I got this tank off CL (it was in storage) and set it up with all the included hardware.

I have followed suggestions, had an experienced friend look at it, and the "mentor" from the LFS aint workin out.

I am having big issues with noise. This thing sounds like a dishwasher, gurgling, bubbling, burping, mayby even farting.

My friend an I are completly lost. We have adjusted every way we can think of. It has gotten a lot better but something still isnt right.

It has a wet dry filter w/ protien skimmer in the bottom of the stand. I think most of the noise is coming from the return (overflow) hoses going to the filter. Ive been working on this for 2 days and my head hurts.
Im not familiar with all the terminolgy yet so Im having trouble following everything.

I hate asking for help, but I'm stuck!

Thanks,

Mike

If you could post some pictures of your set up it may help us diagnose any possible issues. Did you use rigid PVC or a flex house?

one problem i can see if that your drain pipes are in the water to far. you dont want the pipes to go into the water more than 1". this is causing a lot of your bubbling and gurgling. also post pics of your overflows on the tank itself. you drain pipes might not be big enough. what type of return pumps is that? as in how many gph?

oh wow, sump, thems are new to me, need to get with the program with them though, hope you get it sorted out.

Sorry I had to take a nap! (hurting head)

This a Cyclone Bio Filter made by CPR.
I got rid of the bio balls as suggested yesterday. This created more noise from water falling. (added base rock so water didnt fall so far)
I did away with the spa type hose that was used for the overflows. I felt it created turbulence (and leaked) because it wasnt completely smooth inside. (this helped)
Rigged downspouts deeper into sump. .(1" bushing doesnt accept 1'' on the bottom) This helped.
The pictures show the air bubles in the return hoses that are the noise issue I believe.

I installed the drain pipes cause the water noise was awfull b4 I did. I will modify them though
Being inexperienced I am unsure of flow adjustments. I havent been able to establish a water level yet.

I am using the adjustable overflows that came with it. (it an OCEANIC Systems tank). I beleive it it 1" pvc at the bulkhead.
The return hoses (each end) are 1 1/4"
External pump suction is 1". Discharge is 3/4" then split to each side.
The pump is a Quiet 1 one 6000. rated @1506 gph Adjusted for head it should be about 1000-1100 gph.
Thanks
Mike

the pipes in your overflows are called Durso Standpipes. they are designed to reduce noise but im not sure why it has 2 big holes in the sides. it should just have a hole in the top for air. if the durso doesnt have a hole at the top to allow air it will make your drains syphon and flush like a toilet.

your drain pipes in the sump need to be short or else that air causes more bubbling as it exits. they should just barely go into your water in the sump. your water level should be constant from the start. if its fluctuatting that leads me to believe your durso standpipes dont have a hole or thats being blocked which makes it flush and would make your water level fluctuate.

Mike,
The Dursos, (thanks for the name) have a hole on top of them as well. The drain pipes were very short. We found them noisy with or without.
Had to taper PVC with a sander to get them to fit. It sounds better with the longer ones. I WILL follow your suggestion though. :-)
Im not sure on adjusting the flow gates to establish water levels
The water level isnt constant. It starts equalized in the FB then rapidly drops on the left chamber (almost to cavitation). The overflows then play catchup.
Wish I could upload a video from my cell phone.

just looked up your sump and the flow gates are for adjusting water level in the skimmer. from looks of the pics your skimmer isnt on. so i dont think the flow gates matters at the moment. and i dont know what you mean by "It starts equalized in the FB then rapidly drops on the left chamber (almost to cavitation). The overflows then play catchup."

Thanks Mike
My experience has been with hydraulic pumps. The terms I use may not and, probably are not correct or the ones your familiar with. Sry...
Because of the tank divider the pump pulls the left side way down, then the overflows start dumping on the right chamber. The water then comes over the gates and trys filling it (left chamber) up.
Adjusting the gates does affect water level in the right chamber with the drain pipes. Again length and water level....scratching my head.

Is it normal to have all that air in the overflow hoses??

it also appears that your missing one pump to your second skimmer.

Yeah its here though.
We have played with them installed, not installed, installed and running. No noticeable change.

We have gotten is quieter. The affending noise (the pump is another issue) seems to be from the overflow hoses.

Do the specs you find help determine if pump flow is correct?? I found the filter was rated @400 gph but no other info.

i believe you have the CY294 model your return pump is fine for the unit. yea the air in your drains just means that you could handle more water through it but that wouldnt be causing the noise. my pipes have lots of air in them too and my system is very quiet.

CPR AQUATIC, INC - Cyclone Bio-Filters

theres videos and such on installation.

Yep thats the one. Slow modem and I cant watch the video.
Mine is no where near quiet. Im really thinking I need experienced eyes looking at it. Im not capable of resolving the issue or reengineering it I guess.
It will be either a nice tank, or a failed attempt.

You may also try shortening your drain lines and / or attach them to the stand accordingly. You don't want to have a low spot in the line, before it gets to the rigid tubing in the sump. This is surely helping cause some noise or inconsistent draining.

A little searching about tank drains, and I ran across Herbie / Bean Animal design. This setup may not be viable for your tank, but could provide an option or ideas. http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1310585

Going to text you, in order for you to send me the video.

HTH,
Joe
