New biota yellow Tang HLLE?

So I got a new biota yellow Tang in QT. I think this is HLLE, right?

It will eat selcon soaked mysis, but not any nori at the moment.

Yes that looks like HLLE. Keep feeding high nutrition food and keep pristine water. Not sure if the scars will be able to heal up, but he will be a healthy fish.

Yeah that's what I thought. I shoukd of called liveaquaria the day I got him but I got busy with work

Captive-Bred Yellow Tangs - showing HLLE? - CORAL Magazine

I've seen photographs of wild Black Tangs, taken with flash photography, where they show what looks like classic HLLE lesions, but which is simply due to the camera flash.

Yeah I saw that. It has a pretty deep cavity on the side of it's head that's hard to get a good pic of. It's where the center of the V

He only eats mysis soaked with selcon. I got some reef frenzy I'm going to try as well. I got green and purple sea veggies.

My blue tang with Ich in another QT with copper won't touch the nori either. She finally started eating mysis soaked with garlic. I even put garlic on the nori and won't touch it.

Another thing to consider if you're running carbon pull it out. Its been reported that Carbon can contribute to HLLE

What kind of nori are you offering? Roasted, natural or ???
I personally pay the extra for sea veggies or Julian Sprung brand

LA has been horrible lately. I've had a few fish die within 1-2 days of arrival. Diver's Den has been fine. I'm staying away from LA

Feed the purple or brown/red nori. Seems they like that the best. My fish takes forever to finish the green one.

hit or miss. I got a good amount of fish from them which are healthy including a juvenile Achilles which eats everything. The only one doing bad is a blonde naso.

The vitamin Zoecon is specifically made with treating tangs, angels with HLLE and other reef fish that usually feed on sponges, bugs, worms that are missing in captivity feedings. Highly recommend.

if you're running carbon in the system that tang is in, it will cause scarring like that too. Especially if it's low grade, or not running through any mechanical filtration before entering the main tank.

I'm not running carbon. He arrived like that. I got him yesterday

Live aquaria has a guarantee which is hard to beat. You may have to go back and forth with them and indicate to them they did not disclose the HLLE. They may claim the fish isn't WSIWYG from DD and you didn't initially report it. Seems they receive the fish from Biota in Florida and hold them at the Wisconsin facility. Which is better than their California location. Notorious for diseased/infected fish. Their disclaimer is bellow the pic in the fine print. As for most Captive bred tangs I've seen a majority of them have HLLE. Most likely why you don't see these on DD often. One of the main reasons I've held off on buying them. Not to mention how small they are. Good luck. Hopefully LA will make it right.

FWIW I have 3 Captive Bred Biota YTs, and they all look like this, and had the look since I got them and were ~1" long (the biggest is now ~5"). I exclusively feed high quality frozen foods and Selcon Soaked Nori and have a wild caught Kole tang in the same tank with picture perfect coloration and health. My YTs are all fat, healthy and growing and I have no reason to believe I could be doing anything better in terms of diet. I also rarely run carbon, and when I do it is high quality, pre-rinsed and run in a 1 micron filter sock.

So my assumption is with captive-bred YTs this is what you are going to get, and if you want the wild-caught coloration you need to get wild-caught specimens. But that is just based off my own personal experience, if somebody out there has CB YTs with perfect coloration I'd love to see it.

For me personally the issue doesn't bother me and my YT tang gang has been a wonderful addition to my tank, though in your case I can see how the bait-and-switch of the picture is a little annoying.

Hey @Big G - what's the difference been Selcon and Zoecon?
