Hello all, I'm completely new to the reefing world. I am planning on building my own tank 36 or 48x24x24. Obviously building a stand with it. I currently have a 10 gal freshwater tank with a beta and 5 tetra's. Only reason the beta is with the tetras is because he is the Bob Marley of betas. Keeps to himself and swims around. Anyways it is my 6 year olds tank and I take care of it. Well I want my own tank and I want a reef tank. Yes I know a reef tank is a completely different monster. Lol I'm here to gain as much knowledge as possible BEFORE buying anything so the fish and coral have the best chance.

Welcome and smart move for learning before jumping in. Find a few local reefers to be your reef buddies. They are sometimes the best resource you need...Of course Reef2Reef is a great place to find information too. However, we won't be able to lend you a return pump when yours is giving up in the middle of the day/night!
 
Dallas is a great place to be in the hobby. There are several custom tank builders in the area, including Planet Aquariums. They have become a pretty popular builder lately. AGE makes very nice systems, however I don't believe they do direct sales. Also, I would contact @melev . He is local to you and has been a figure in the hobby for over a decade. He also has an online store and makes acrylic sumps and accessories. I am sure he would be a wealth of knowledge, and from what I have seen, is a really nice guy. Happy hunting and welcome to R2R!
 
Tidal Gardens
All in ones are nice for beginners. They seem expensive at first glance, but by the time you figure in all the stuff you need to build a traditional style tank, you usually come out cheaper. I think the redsea systems look nice. Cool part is some of their models upgrade to use a sump, which you'll definitely want as you become more advanced and want a nicer skimmer, or to run media reactors, the list goes on! I would suggest finding the local reef club and ask around where the nice stores and go look at some systems. Look back on some of melevs videos. I think they did one about a year ago where they visited a few of the nicer local shops.

I plan on building my own tank, sump and skimmers. With proper knowledge of course. The all in one's are nice but I'm a diy guy, plus I plan on doing it in steps (building, curing, and cycling) and not all at once so cost is not an issue. If it sounds like a new response, my apologies. Lol but I will look into those systems.

Yep this is your local to go too site.
My opinion is though you get a lot more info here on R2R, just more hits and a much larger fan base.
I'm in Houston and we have our own local club, it's nice if I have nothing else to do but R2R is the place to go.

Welcome to R2R, agree with all of the above. You have a large base to draw from when asking questions. Just bump your post so that it is fresh in front of everyone eyes and you should get answers pretty quick. I built my stand, sump, but I do not know about the tank:) you are a better person than I. Good luck on you journey
 
Ok awesome thank you all for your imput. I have no intention of leaving r2r. I was just curious if dfw had a section on r2r for local members. I have been looking around here and see a wealth of knowledge.

I helped my friend in California build 2 of his 4 acrylic tanks. Not that hard to build, just have to make sure everything is lined up and square and use euro braces.
 
Acrylic is no problem, I would like to do sapphire glass rimless. when I built my sump last month I should have sanded and torched the edges before I glued. I ended up doing a bunch of filling with the glue after words and that is something I do not want to do with a display tank. I will look for you post as you progress, I think you will have a cool build.

Hope your not going to hold your breath for updates. Lol I still need to do research on livestock and coral compatibility with each other, Also designing the enteral sump. Obviously I will start a build thread with ideas of setups and ideas of livestock. I welcome all feed back and as well as the occasional slap on the back of the head (bonus points if you know the reference).
