New Naso tang not eating

I have this large (5”-6”) Naso tang and he isn’t eating the foods I’m offering.

Here’s what I tried:
Blackworms
Spirulina mysis.

I noticed it’s mouth is pretty big compared to both foods.

I do have LRS which is much meatier. I’m going to give that a shot.

It’s been at LFS for a few weeks (I’ve been watching it) however, I forgot to ask them to feed it.

What size QT is it in?
Do you think it banged its mouth up on it way to your home?

I've had issues with big naso not feeding right away. They often refuse nori for me, but should take whole mysids just fine.

It’s a 20 gallon long. It’s plenty of room because he is not an active swimmer at all. It’s about 6 times bigger than him length wise.

I don’t know if he banged his mouth while getting caught in LFS. Maybe he did. I’m not sure.

That’s a big fish for a small qt. Definitely not saying it’s the problem, but I’m sure very stressful

All else being equal - I've quarantined tangs in those dealer cubicle systems (8"x10") - not proud of it, just that it can be done, so the tank size itself isn't causing the fish not to eat.

Is there anything on its mouth that would show up in a photo?

Is there some reason you can't call the lfs and see what kind of food they were feeding it, so that you can try feeding the same food?

That does look like the damage caused by net capture. Common in angelfish, sometimes with Ctenocheatus and Zebrasoma tangs.

Backstory: I had a coral beauty and flame angel in QT. The flame angel got one cloudy eye which turned into popeye but went away (took about 8 days in total). Here are the pictures:

The Flame angel healed on it’s own.

I transferred these fish into a community observation tank (with other fish). They have been well for the past 5 days there, but last night the coral beauty was having labored swimming. This morning it was breathing heavily and laying on its side. It had BOTH eyes cloudy plus fin rot. I also see a red bump on BOTH of it’s fins.


The fish died on the spot, but I’m worried about the community fish that shared the same water. They all currently look fine, so it’s the perfect time to start preventative measures?

Please note: the Naso tang in the original post had NOTHING to do with these angel fish posts. They are in complete different systems and were never exposed to each other.

Asian and on some Occasions, Hispanic Grocery stores carry different kinds of Seaweed. Also is this one of the ones that eat Urchin? Asian Groceries sometimes have Urchins.

I see a lot of ripped fins on that angel. Maybe a case of aggression, and injury. If it goes away and stays away you might not have to treat with anything.

Ripped fins is bacterial. It looks like a fish ripped it off but it isn’t. I’m worried if a deadly gram negative bacteria is in my water now?

I don’t know much about bacterial infections. I think harmful bacteria will always be in water but fish’s immune system will fight it off most of the time unless it’s immune system is compromised.

Not always bacterial though. How to prove it even is? How does the other fish tail compare? Have you tested parameters? If your afraid of that you could possibly try an antiseptic like ruby bath. (although listed as gram positive some of these antibiotics will target some negative) If it doesn't work it could be something gram negative. Where one of the mycins would work, or amoxicillin. Imo I would wait a bit to see if it heals a little even or watch for progression. If it doesn't that could be a give away.

I normally see some discoloration, thinning of the fin or a strip of white at the edge of fin rot

Probably too late, but I often give freshly dead a FW dip just to screen for flukes.
Do you think this is fin rot? The sharp edges make me think aggression or something chewed on it after it died.

It died in my hand. I think you guys are right. I might have a terror in this tank. I’m going to use those tank dividers from now on in QT.
