I would have purchase the "EL" version as well if it were available when I upgraded from the classic. Yeah, having an idea of ORP and salinity is fine, but both of those probes have their own set of issues. Must not be moving too "full" units and need a boost (cannot blame them for than though). Also maybe the Trident is coming soon so they want to have a lower cost option for people wanting the EB832 as well (not just the head unit) and maybe the Trident will be using 1Link. Either way, I still won't be getting the Trident.
Without onboard variable speed/dimming ports not really worth 500.00. That means no power head control or led dimming and leds is what most people have. That means a module which pushes up the price.
They could have left something else off but dimming.. They did this because they know people will have to buy one. I think this will be discontinued just like the Apex lite was. Two close in price once you add dimming.
Didn't even realize that. You'd think that they would just have the same unit as the full just without the orp/conductivity probe. I'd image that they should have decreased the cost of producing it by now. To have to create another mold and PCB might have cost them more than just selling the same head in the "EL" package.
I use my older classic apex to run my MP40’s, but I’m slightly interested in trident. So this new apexEL does nothing for me because it can’t control my Vortech pumps. So I need to upgrade to the whole unit at $800 plus the cost of the trident if I want it....

Exactly. I see an advantage and a huge cost savings for new technology without need for full blown access.I think some of you are missing the point...
The EL is analogous to the "Lite" version of the Apex classic. It is an opportunity to get the same "brain" CPU and an EB832 for a much more budget friendly price. The great thing about the Apex is that you can add functionality to fit your needs with modules. If I had to jump into the controller world at the $800 price point, I might still not have a controller. But I picked up the Classic Lite a few years before it was discontinued and I have added functionality to my system over time.
The three things which separate the EL from the full model - ORP, Conductivity, and VSP - can be added over time with modules. If you need these things right off the bat, then pick up the full model (at the full price). Many of us probably already have these modules anyway from a prior apex system.
The Apex EL is no comparison to the Jr. The fact that the EL is compatible with EB832 opens up seamless compatibility with DOS and WAV, the EL will be compatible with trident, has wireless, and is fully controllable/configurable through fusion, and the Jr brain is limited to 7 modules.
So the Apex Classic base package is similar to this, but here's a list of differences..
ApexEL has, but Classic doesn't have..
- built-in WIFI
- 1Link ports
- EB832 with per-socket power consumption monitoring (vs EB8 on Classic)
Classic has, but ApexEL doesn't have..
- onboard orp port
- onboard variable speed/dimming ports
- display
I'm not sure if this new unit will have Triton and IoaT support though.
