Hi I'm new on here, wanting to know how long everyones algae stage lasts? Mines been bad for about a week now. I set the tank up on 27/11/21 (a red sea 350Xl) and used Dr Tims to cycle I added my first fish on 11/12/21 I'm cleaning the glass every day now and just wanting to know how long this will continue. All fish and corals look great so I'm not worried about that. I'm doing a 15% water change weekly and checking parameters (see below) Also I've added a pic!
Temp 26
Salinity 1.024
Amonia 0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 1
Calcium 420
Magnesium 1350
Alk 9.3
Phosphate 0

The algae doesnt look bad from that picture.

Can you post pics of the "bad" algae?

Also what test kit are you using for nitrate and phosphate?

First, welcome to R2R!

As for your algae, I don't really see any in the photo other than normal film algae on the glass. Can you get a white light photo? A brown "algae" called diatoms is very common in a new tank. It is brown, usually dusty looking and collects on the sandbed and rocks. It will burn itself out after a while. That could be anywhere from a few weeks to a few months depending on your particular tank, source water, sand mix, water parameters etc. It is unsightly but normal and harmless.

A better, slightly larger and taken with white light photo will help us to identify the issue to give you better advice.

Hi thanks for the responses! Yes the pic was taken after cleaning, it just seems to be the glass but I do have a diamond goby, blue cheek goby and a algae blenny sifting the sand. The algae on the glass seems to be a dark green and comes off easy. Not to worried just wanted to introduce myself!

That sounds like normal algae, you'll get used to cleaning it and it will start to bother you less and less over time.

You may read people talking about lowering nutrients to reduce algae but I dont recomend chasing nutrients (nitrates & phosphates) down to near zero inorder to slow algae growth as corals need them to thrive in an aquarium.

With that being said chasing nutrients to the upside isnt always a good idea either.
If things are going well with your current parameters dont fix what aint broke lol.

Mine finished around a year old

Add a few turbo, astrea and cerith snails for the very light algae you have.

when my algae (diatoms0 started, it went for at least a week or two until i did something to try to help it along. i added rowa phos to help remove silicates. i left that in for two days. i found that i was getting a bacterial bloom, but my diatoms had subsided greatly, and a day or so later, i had no diatoms left. two weeks later, the bloom is gone, as well as diatoms.
simple answer is that it could last a couple/few weeks. if its diatoms, its just going to be dependent on how quick it eats up the silicates. my diatoms issue was significantly worse than what looks to be in your tank. so much worse that mine looked like dinos, whereas yours is very light. mine was very dark brown. with where yours is, i dont know that i would do too much since its really light anyway, and would really just ride it out. eventually it will go away

This is the tank tonight after 24 hours

It’s film algae. Often occurs when using tap water, light intensity a little high or tank at or near a window

Purchase my saltwater from a reputable marine fish specialist, my lights are radion Xr30’s and I’m using a preset schedule and the tank isn’t near a window! Could it just be going through a stage?
