I just just a Reef Octopus 110. This is my first in sump skimmer so I need a little help. Where should I adjust the water level to? The gate valve is also a little under the water. Is this okay? Also should the line that comes from the bottom of the collection cup be on or should the plug stay on?

The water level should be at 6.5 inches for it to work properly.

These skimmers are designed to operate at a certain height, I am not certain what that would be for this skimmer. If the water level gets too deep the gate valve will not be needed (in theory). If you shut off the tank circulation the sump will get deeper and that may cause your skimmer to overflow. I think you probably need to raise it a bit?

My skimmer has a sticker that indicates where the water level inside the skimmer is supposed to be. I would guess that your water level inside the skimmer should be at or below the black ring on the neck below the skimmer cup.

All of these things can be figured out with trial and error.
Shut off the return circulation and see what happens when the sump fills up.
I'm sure others will chime in with advice as you move forward.

These typically need to sit in at least 8"-9" of water. Bubbles need to come up to the neck of the skimmer .

If your water level is 8-9 inches in your sump, you may have to put skimmer on a stand. 6.5 from bottom base plate to water line should do.

Also after you get the water height. skimmers i tend to for the first couple days keep open for a spell 3-10 days depending on skimmer and then start adjusting after it is producing a steady level of bubbles(at the same level in the cone for a whole day)
Then slowly close the control apparatus. Make changes slow and over hours, that change you made at 5 might not take full effect till 10.

My RO 150 NWB sits in 8" of water. Recommend by Reef Octopus. The 110, not 100% sure, I'll look it up.

Also, the Octo 110 needs to be ran in 6-7 in. You do not want the wtr lvl to be above or below the return pipe. Mine runs great w/the wtr lvl right at the midpoint of the return.

Is the bottom of the skimmer to water line its sitting in 6.5?? Kinda important??

Also you can adjust, close the valve until the foam is half way up the neck of the cup. The skimmer has to break in. Will take a few days, up to 2 weeks.

The plug is a drain for your waste. You can leave it in, or connect a tube and drain it off somewhere else.

Keep the plug on so the waste doesn't drain back into the sump, some people like taking the plug off so it drains into another container and then dispose of it.

I had the same skimmer, great skimmer. Below are the answers to your questions:

Where should I adjust the water level to? I think your water level looks ok.

The gate valve is also a little under the water. Is this okay? It's okay that your gate valve is a little under water or fully submerged.

Also should the line that comes from the bottom of the collection cup be on or should the plug stay on? Use the line only if you want to gunk to drain to a bottle of sort, but I usually keep it plugged cause I wash my cup every week.

I would adjust the gate valve so that the bubbles/foam level is 1/4 high (from the bottom) in the collection cup.

Goodluck!

I have the valve all the way open right now. Its sending foam into the collection cup. If I close it all the way, it overflows. How do I know when it is broken in?
