New Tank Help!

These are my 2 clowns

one died the other 2 are still doing their thing, the guy at the LFS told me that its normal for hermits to die since they get territorial and that hermits are " expendable"

Yea some people say to cycle with them but personally I wouldnt just for future tanks. When you cycle just with live rock and live sand, what happens is half of the algae..pods..anything alive dies off and the remaining alive junk eats the dead stuff. When there is a larger amount of die off then the remaining alive algae..pods..worms blah blah.. cant consume the die off of an animal. So amonia levels will be higher and the cycle will take longer. ):

i will keep that in mind for future reference as soon as i get well established with my little 8 gallon i will step up to a bigger one as i am finding out this hobby gets VERY addicting! LOL :smile:and just think this all started when i got a 10gal tank for xmas ( that is setup for freshwater)..now as for the water change i have premixed salt water on standby however it is not heated to temp i do have a spare heater avail should i actually get it to tank temp or would it be okay to use at room temp? and also do i just siphon out the old water like i do when i do a water change in my freshwater setup? Thanks for all the help BTW i am learning a lot here!

Awesome ya I have had a 34g red sea for about 3 years and we just decided to get an 8g saltwater is soo much fun its like having my own tide pool in my room I sit a watch everything till my eyes hurt there is always something going on !!! Anyway yes it is better to warm the water but if ita room temp assuming like 75-78 ? You will be fine because you dont have any corals yet. I have a very touchy gonipora that hates any drastic water temp changes and he will close up for almost a day if I domt warm the water... oh and yes siphon it just like a freshwater tank. You only need to do about 1 g every week at the most when your levels are consistently good. Some say you only need to do about 16oz but I do a gallon to be on the safe side

I will do a freshwater change tomorrow and hopefully everything will balance out, i have not had much evaporation loss either but when i do lose a little its in the filter area i add some RO water ( my filter is built in BTW one side has the cartridge the other has the return that flows into the tank ( thats the side where i get a little water loss from

Because you dont have a sump make sure that you watch your bio load carbon can only do so much can you take a picture of the filter part ? And forsure use really high quality RO

When my clowns come ill post a pic !! I never really like ordering things from far but I had to get these clowns !! And they are tank bred so better then getting things from the wild
