So, I just bought this tank and i don't know enough about styles of tanks to understand what is going on here. I had assumed it was just a bottom drilled tank with an over flow....now I have no idea.

Looks to be some diy customization? Person you bought it off able to give any info? Curious to hear what ya find out.

Overflow box, different than I've seen before. Bottom of the overflow box drilled?

Two holes at the top are for returns.

Assuming the hole in the overflow box is for the return to go through. I guess.

No bottom drilled... the girl i got it from knew nothing about tanks. Bought it for her son but never set it up....from what i can tell so far the back small compartment has no holes any where...the front small has the slits on the front and the large has the hole....i am beyond confused....two drilled holes on the top at each end but no others in the tank.....

If you have a LFS near you might be able to get someone to come & take a look at it & see if they can help. As stated above it definitely looks like someone added some things to a regular tank. They could help you set it up also if their good.

Unfortunately the closest LFS is. About 30 min aways so I’m sure they would charge a hefty fee...

Not Necessarily, you could become a good customer afterwards & 30 mins isn't that far. It never hurts to ask, all they can say is no & if they charge alot their not someone I would want to do business with.

I think the tank was part of a LFS at some point. 2 holes in each corner, one for the pvc inlet, other pvc out to next tank. Gray box mystery, maybe to house the pump and keep fish out. Top definitely dyi, probably to hold something

Wild guess

That is bizarre. Looks like it was intended as some kind of all-in-one. Do the chambers in that ‘overflow’ connect inside? Never seen a cross brace siliconed 4” down from the top. If there is no hole in the bottom of the overflow thingie, not clear what the two holes in the back are for.

Ok, so after waiting until it gets dark and using a flashlight, there is a small opening going from the large compartment on the very bottom (1 inch tops) to the rear smal compartment. There is also a smaller (maybe 1/2 inch) going from the rear small compartment to the front small compartment about 1/2 way up .

True,,, and. I’m actually a previous customer...went in and bought a 90 gallon tank/sump/skimmer/rock etc...cost over a few grand....

Are the chambers connected at all? worst case you can fill it by hose and see how the water flows., that should help figure it out? I agree with @Saveafish though looks like an old school Dutch aquarium system
