New tank...what is this plumbing?

Wow, thanks everyone... this tank just keeps getting more interesting. From the photos when I bought it, the take looked like a normal drilled tank...didn't expect to find all this...

Yes, but very small...I had to wait until dark and shine a flashlight in to see them.

My initial plan was to set it up as a seahorse/macro/gorgonian tank but now I have no idea if that is practical....since there is a current DAS company, I can't seem to find much on google as to the older systems...
 
If there is no hole in the bottom of the tank at the bottom of the boxes. The first think I would carefully do is get rid of the box. maybe its siliconed in place, a guitar string could be used to go down the back and cut the silicone (like a cheese wire). From there all being well I would post some fresh pics.

That is one old acrylic tank. Hope you didn't way too much money for it. One could getting it functioning as a overflow. But really I would just throw it a way and get something more workable. Not worth the effort that would be required to make it function properly.
 
Or maybe he can remove the inside box and just byu some pvc for the in/out, no?
 
My guess is that is was designed to be some kind of all in one..looks like chambers for bio-media and possibly an internal skimmer. Could paint the box black, may look nice.

IMO you should scrap it. the blue acrylic is too close to the holes to even put a bulkhead if your wanted to use them. It would take alot of your time to fix this. You could find something on CL or the dry goods for sale forum here for not a whole lot.

Ok, so it holds water...I don't know what they used to attach the box, but it's not going anywhere....I was thinking maybe an in tank refugium? Also does anyone see any reason why I can't remove the top braces or at least raise them?
 
Hmm..Ok, so new question...Do I need the braces? On a side note- I don't think anything in this tank is acrylic...its all glass... I may have gotten a little over enthusiastic and decided to remove the brace, thinking...I can always put it back...but that's not happening now...Do I need to make more braces?
 
I am definetly not an expert on tank construction but I remeber reading that the glue that allows for rim less glass tanks is a fairly new invention. So I would assume being an older tank, that you would need the braces
