new tank

If you do decide to drill it, I might suggest that you make sure it is not tempered glass before you start to drill. I believe tempered glass is fairly common on 55 gallon tanks and it will shatter if you attempt to drill it.

Excellent point! It's especially true for big store tanks (marineland, petco etc)

good call so look at it with polarized glasses right. and its probably possible the bottom is tempered while the sides may not be?

This is not a current list, but you can see that at one time, the Marineland / Perfecto 55s were all tempered glass. Doesn't mean that yours is, but I would definitely check.

Was digging around in the garage looking for a place for my RODI and found this spout at the bottom right of this pic. Would this work for an install location for my RODI? Where did you install yours? I want something permanent because installing and uninstalling is not appealing to me. neither is cutting into the pipes inside my house. Also, heard that the waste water can be tapped into the sprinter system. will i need a Phd for that? :)

I split mine off my washer hookup in the laundry closet.. Used a garden hose y adapter, washer on one side, rodi on the other, my waste goes down the drain to be reprocessed so I don't feel like I am "wasting it" other than paying for it, but water is still cheap here. I have a ball valve in the water supply line to the rodi unit to turn it on/off, so no connecting/disconnecting all the time.

Temperature plays a role in the rodi unit processing the water, so that is something to take into account if you are planning a garage install. What is your garage temp high and low?

Convenience in transporting water around is something to consider, how will you get water from rodi unit to the tank? Is there any impediment to rolling a brute trashcan around? my last garage had a 2in lip to get into the house, no way to roll something in..
My laundry closet is ten feet from the tank and has been a convenient spot, think about how you are going to use it not just where it's out of the way.

Flow will depend on what you want to keep (acros vs something like mushrooms) as well as size of your tank. I'd shoot for a minimum of 2,000 GPH, and more if you plan on keeping acros or similar.

thank you thank you. Looks like I could do acros and mushrooms if they are positioned correctly in the tank?

Sounds like a very nice set up, thank you for sharing that. Now, I am not sure the temp swings in the garage but I would say brutally hot in the summer and super chilly in the winter. so........garage also has three steps into the house  might think about a master bathroom under sink install since the tank is in the bedroom anyways. It's a 55g tank so I don't believe I will need a ton of water on hand all the time. Maybe make a batch the night before a wc and then keep some gallons on hand for an emergency? What is the time frame for one of theses things cranking out a couple gallons?

I have a brs 75g/day unit, I can get 5 gallons in less than 2 hours. I previously had mine installed under a bathroom sink as well. I would cram the waste line into the sink overflow to run it and coil the lines under the sink when not in use. The production rate is gonna depend on water temp and your pressure, I get 65psi from the tap, which is fine. Some will add a booster pump to get up I the 80+psi and you'll have a faster production rate, I believe...

I plumbed into my cold water supply under the sink with one of these

So again not a permanent connection, but not a connect/disconnect all the time.

Highly recommend using a float valve on your rodi container so you don't overflow it.

And this is the valve I use between the water supply and the rodi unit

very nice, thank you!

yea sump it, ant go wrong gives you room to put all your stuff like protein skimmer, any dower pumps, place for pods to grow and more room for filtration.and on top of that adding more water volume so if something goes wrong you have more time to catch it. i have a 65 with a 30g sump, so far so good. sump can be just as cool the the display with life and growth.

Yes, you could, but they require different amounts of water movement. Acropora come from high energy, shallow reefs where there's ridiculous amounts of water movement and light.

Many soft corals can eventually get used to that kind of light if you increase intensity slowly, but most don't like the high flow that acros need. Some will close up and get ticked off if they get acro levels of flow.
