Yes, you could, but they require different amounts of water movement. Acropora come from high energy, shallow reefs where there's ridiculous amounts of water movement and light.

Many soft corals can eventually get used to that kind of light if you increase intensity slowly, but most don't like the high flow that acros need. Some will close up and get ****** off if they get acro levels of flow.

yea sump it, ant go wrong gives you room to put all your stuff like protein skimmer, any dower pumps, place for pods to grow and more room for filtration.and on top of that adding more water volume so if something goes wrong you have more time to catch it. i have a 65 with a 30g sump, so far so good. sump can be just as cool the the display with life and growth.

Just sump it. Dont let the over thinkers overthink ya. keep on the craigslist, find a 3 chamber sump that fits your stand.
get a 65 0r so rated skimmer. Tunze is EASY.

Heres what I have,
55 gal DT,
30gal sump(oversized for big fuge),
Hob overflow by 1200gph by eshopps $80.Buy a hose for outlet.
get a dc4000 return pump by jaebo (set at 75%)
I have a tunze 9002(but a HUGE fuge cuz im a nutjob.) YOU (9004)
ATO
Youll nee 40lbs med fine NOT FINE live sand.
Get around 30 to 50 lb of live rock.(most expensice part)
Lights How much money do you have? 700?? reef breeders 48in photon. 500? SBreeflight 30 0r 32 or 2 16. Raming is freakin cool jus sayin.
chiller, MAybe if it gets hot where you live

Don't have experience with Tunze but I have a Reef Octopus BH50 and I am extremely happy with it! That this for it's size is a beast! I agree with the DCT jebao I have a 6000 and I am really pleased as well. Finally on the lights, I have the Mars Aqua from eBay ~$95 a pop and I think you'll need 2 (or the 300W version for $160) and I am really happy with them as well.

I may have read the article :mad: but dude was selling on craiaglist his whole kit and said he didn't know if his RO unit could do DI which leads me to believe he was not using DI water and was surviving....kind of...

IMHO, buy 90% dry rock and 10% live rock. You don't need 50-75 pounds either. It looks better with less rock in most cases, but I will say the more rock you add the better your bio filter can be.

Thanks! I have loved keeping fish for years and put it on hold for the past 10 years getting married and having three kids. But the kids are old enough now that they can help with fish chores and they love seeing them eat! Plus, in Colorado, the winters are like 10 months out of the year so I didn't realize how desperate I was for an "indoor" hobby. One that wasn't dependent on crappy weather. Found it! Now, if I could just stop changing my mind and trolling craigslist for the kind of system I want to set up and get to work, I might have a reef some day!

If you don't want to drill the tank the Tunze Reef Pack is a great way to go on the filtration. The best tank I ever had was all Tunze 30 years ago!
Either T5 or LED lighting seems to be a good way to go with great results and lower energy costs.
