How about splitting it into 2 areas, one on the right and one on the left with an open area inbetween. Stack them so you have 2 on each base with a top rock spanning them. Will give the impression of more room, and is appealing to the eye.

Hi Cody, and welcome to the forum.

The full tank shot is always helpful when having an issue with your tank. The experienced eye can tell so much by looking at a picture.You tank is looking great!

It is difficult to make suggestions when we do not know what you have for equipment. So provide us with a shopping list of the equipment you have installed in the system.

For example, tell us...

- What kind of lighting do you have?
- Do you have a sump?
- What about a protein skimmer?
- Do you use RODI water?
- How long has the tank been up and running?
- Have you completed a cycle?

Your rock work looks nice. I looks like dry rock to me; is that correct?

The next thing to do is cycle your tank.

You can cycle your tank without lights. And, since cycling can take a month, I wouldn't spend money on lights yet. You have time.

Use the time it takes to cycle your tank as time to think about what your next steps will be. Also, you can save more cash toward a better light.

Which API test kits do you have? You will want to monitor Nitrites (NO2), Nitrates (NO3) and Ammonia during your cycle.

In general, API has a reputation for inaccuracy in the reef-keeping community, but you can work with it. I have both API and Red Sea.

I find API test kits less complicated and easier to use. The Red Sea kits are much more complex, and in my opinion, offer a higher degree of accuracy. So I typically will use API for a quick test and use Red Sea to back up any results I get with API.

There are many different products out there which help cycle the tank. Personally, I'd rather spend my money on other things. I prefer the good ole fashioned cocktail shrimp in the tank method, along with seeding.

Seeding is when you take a piece of live rock from an established tank and place it in the new setup. By doing this, you move the rock and all of the nitrifying bacteria it is home to into the new tank. With all of that dry rock, a piece of seed rock is a good idea.

On a side note, have you thoroughly cleaned your dry rock before putting it in the tank? Lots of organics on dry rock which will create algae issues if you haven't properly prepared them for use.

I can't speak to using ammonia for a cycle. But I know people do it and hope that someone else can offer you some advise on that method.

Phantom feeding will work, much in the same way a cocktail shrimp does.

I'm uncertain which tests are included with the API saltwater test kit, but I believe it covers what you want to know for cycling.
