Hey there all! I'm new to the hobby and new to MTRC. I've been posting around asking questions for a couple weeks. I bought me a tank and figured it was time to join up.

Welcome! You are definitely in the right place. R2R is an amazing resource of information. And MTRC has a ton of great members to learn from.

Tank's a 125 gallon with dual overflows.

Since the tank came up in conversation what are your opinions on the size of the sump I should use. I had plans to use a 40 breeder. What do you guys think?

I think that would make for a great sump. With all things reef, go as big as you can. If a 40g breeder is what you're most comfortable with, wear it out. If you can and want to go bigger, go for it. :)

From the video: He stresses that he doesnt use any 90's and all 45's, which is great and I'm full believer in this. But yet, he has a T fitting coming off his return pump??? They do have Y fittings, but typically not at Lowes or HD, you have to order them online. I honestly dont think having the return pump in the middle is a good idea. Especially since his returns are not in the middle of the tank. I would put the refugium in the middle and the return on the far right. Honestly though, a refugium of that size really isnt going to help with nutrient reduction, it will only aid in pod population.

What do you plan on keeping in the refugium? And what is the size of your skimmer?

The skimmer is either going to be the nac5.5 by bubble magus or the nwb150 by reef octopus. Then I was also going to build an ats.

Oh also the only thing I had planned was to put chaeto in the refugium

given the size of the RO skimmer being 12" wide, I would do the first section 13-14", then do your 3 baffle bubble trap and then do a 8-9" chaeto section, then the rest for return.

I run something very similar but my fuge section is only 6" wide and I have a large return section so I can fit my return pump and a couple of reactors in there as well.

If your 125 is a standard 72x18x24, then a 40 breeder won't fit under your stand (unless you're building a custom...) I had a 55 under my 125, and it fit great. (That tank is well documented within the club, as I believe it's been in about 4 different people's homes) The benefit to a 55 is you can put as many chambers in it as you want, or even baffle off one end as an ATO resevoir, and it'll all fit nicely under any standard stand as long as it's tall enough.

His tank is a 120 (4'x2'x2') so a 40B should fit under there just fine. Personally I believe the 40B is a great size for a sump!
