Hi everyone I was wondering what temperature is best for my tank? I've been up and running for about two months and I think my tank may be to warm. Right now it's about 82 degrees

Welcome. 78 ideal 82 okayish but not much of a buffer. Heat is more an enemy for tanks than cold i believe. At 82 if there is a problem with rising temp you have less time to catch it than at 78. 82 is the highest point of my temp swings(summer days) usually running around 80.

Get a small fan to blow over the top of ur tank and under the lights or on the sump if u have 1.

Welcome. Like already stated 82 isn't bad but you don't have a buffer for those just in case moments. On the other hand keeping a higher temp will raise the metabolism rate of your inhabitants which to can be good or bad depending on some factors. Just some things to think about and maybe start another discussion

Here is a good article on temperature.
Reefs Magazine - The Great Temperature Debate, Part IV

Here is the conclusion of the article:

"Nonetheless, most corals and other reef organisms tend to have thermal optima within the range of 77-82 °F, and which is the temperature range I suggest is likely to work best for most reef tanks. Since most aquaria house animals from different regions with somewhat different temperature tolerances, I’ve suggested that relatively safe upper and lower bounds for temperature in reef tanks are about 84 °F and 72 °F, respectively."

Totally new to the hobby. Just received a 40 gallon tank for free. I am interested in starting a saltwater aquarium, what all do I need to start? Also which filter is best to use?

what to you plan to keep fish with live rock or a reef

Not necessarily. Its amazing how much you can learn here or just by researching the internet. One more question before i answer your question, how much do you anticipate on spending?

Ok so for mechanical filtration I would get a hang on the back filter and modify it to fit a chemipure elite packet, purigen, and filter floss on top of that. I will tell you how to get filter floss on the cheap if you want.Your also going to need a heater, and live rock or dry rock, you can save some extra money if you go barebottom and in all honesty will look just as nice and be easier to clean.Since your not going to start with corals you can use any type cheap aquarium lighting you wish. Also going to need aquarium salt mixing bucket for that. A hydrometer or refractormeter

Ok I'm taking notes of this. For starters I might go barebottom. What is your thoughts on ugf I have one that I've never used will That be ok to start

Welcome to the bare bottom club! Just the scary paint the outside bottom with a shade of white and your set. Personally i would not recommend a under gravel filter. Just pick up a hang on the back. Do a quick google search on modded hob filter you will get the idea what i was talking about with the different filter material. Are you familiar with how to cycle your tank and tank chemistry?
