Hello, I am new to the forums and new to the hobby. I am purchasing a 210g (84x24x24) reef ready aquarium and stand from a local guy here. He hasn't had anything in it in 2-3 years and the tank itself is about five years old. He ran canister filters with it, I'll be running a 44g sump/refugium I picked up on Craigslist.

The tank and rock need a thorough cleaning, which I'll be doing once I get it home this week. I will also be taking a long hard look at the stand. I'm not sold on its structural strength.

I will start a build thread once I get it started and it will be a slow process for me. I'm in no rush and have a lot to learn and to finish getting together. He has some LED lights and T5 lighting, unsure of the brands. I plan to get an RODI unit this week and start storing some water for the fill.

My wife's on board so far and I am going to try and keep it that way by taking it slow and not blowing a ton of money all at once lol. I know I need a skimmer, trying to figure out the size for the tank, and the lighting will need a long hard evaluation.

Other than that I look forward to learning and getting into the reefing world. I wish I had a good lfs, but the one's I have closest to me are just over an hour away. I am fortunate to have a knowledgeable guy helping me out over the phone and he also does orders through BRS at cost for a group of reefers in his area.

I'll post some pictures of the stand and would appreciate any input you guys have to offer.

Welcome, nice start right out the gate. Can’t wait for the build thread

Welcome to R2R!!! Thanks for the introduction - you may want to ask one of the #mods to move this to the "Meet and Greet Forum" so that even more fellow reefers will see your intro.

It looks like you are off to a really good start - taking it slow is a really good approach. We're glad you're here!

I just realized this one didn't upload. What are your thoughts on the stand? The ends and large center section of the back are 3/4" plywood, appears to be cabinet grade, and the small section between the doors. The top is solid wood other than the corners cutout for the plumbing.

Hey @Cwd56 !!! Welcome to R2R!

You are patient. Check... that is GOLD in this hobby!

The best piece of advice I ever got was: is it leaking? Are all your fish dead? No? Then calm down and learn... observe instead of trying to fix something that may be nothing. ;) we are our own worst enemies sometime. You're going to see some weird stuff lol

I really like the tank! I would hang on to the canister if it's free. They make great vacuums for algae and sump detritus removal.

As for the lights, sorry cant comment... but the stand, I can tell you that if you are uncomfortable with it, it's definitely worth investigating. Have you had a chance to climb in there and inspect it for water damage, rot, integrity etc? More pics would help in that regard.

Oddly enough, plywood is surprisingly strong and can hold much more than you'd think... but being cautious is definitely healthy.

+1

A stand for a 210g is worth reviewing from a risk management perspective. 210g x 8.55 lbs/g of saltwater = 1795 lbs + aquascaping = ~1 ton. Presumably if they came together then the stand held the weight, but the question is also about you being comfortable and not wondering. When I got my 150g I switched out the stand because I didn't want to keep thinking about the stand that came with it.

The stand would make me a bit hesitant. But I built mine 10 years ago and still expect it to fail at anytime. If your worried you could alway beef that one up with 2x4 or 2x6. No sense tossing the stand. Just improve on it
