aweesommee that's a way better price than what I was quoted. thanks again man. im contemplating on whether I should get the drinking water system or just the RO because if im making 75 gpd, that's quite a bit and I would definitely use it as drinking water. do you know the difference between the two? if I just bought the regular RO system would it be safe as far as drinking? and im gonna go ahead and make the assumption that an auto top-off would be connected in some way to your RO system and the stored water?
 
If you want it for drinking, I would set up a drinking water kit, which is extra. It has a bladder tank that makes 2or3 gallons ready to go whenever you want to drink it. You also have to bypass the Deionized chamber because you shouldn't drink Deionized water. It tastes funny and it has no pH.

oh and since you only do a 10% water change per month, you're obviously replacing evaporated water throughout the month as well right? and is it that everytime you top it off with RO water you're adding trace elements along with it? that brings me to like the kalkwasser drip people use.. that is to replace calcium?

There are many kinds of auto top off, but yes, you would use either a pump in your trash can or run a separate float valve to your sump. The first choice tends to be better.

Yes, the water change is salt water out then in with same salinity. Fresh DI water to replace evaporation. Yes you can do a kalk drip for your evaporation replacement. This increases Alkalinity, Calcium, and binds phosphate.

so, say I do a kalk drip for the evaporated water, I wouldn't want to just add kalk to the water im replacing right? because that would be too much of a shock. should I just constantly have a kalk drip running like on my sump or something just like really slow so that it doesn't make it too potent? and i'd imagine that'd be like a trial and error type of thing or some time of a equation that would incorporate my average evaporation, my desired alk, ca level, and that would determine how much kalk im adding over the course of each month? ahhh this is so confusing for some reason

Haha.... I know it's a lot to take in. Yes, you can only add a kalk mixture slowly by dripping it into the system. Calcium hydroxide is what Kalkwasser is. It raises pH very quickly so you can't add it quickly. What kind of corals do you have? You may not need Kalkwasser.

dude I haven't even set up my tank yet. its a 20H and I have enough equipment to set it up initially im just too nervous. I want to make sure im 100% comfortable with what im going to be running in this tank and I still have a lot of planning to do as well. im not the type to put a coral in my tank and then adjust my parameters and lighting to meet that coral's needs. I want to have everything im going to be putting into the aquarium before I set it up and I want to have a complete plan for corals and fish and other organisms. so basically; if I can do sps, ill do sps, if I can only do lps, ill do that but I want to know everything they need and if certain strains are hardier... since its a 20H I was wondering if I could put intense lighting on it and have some small sps near the top and lps near the bottom? does that seem possible?
 
Very Good... Glad to see you are building a plan. A 20H is pretty small, but very doable. I guarantee you will want something bigger within a year. PM me with your game plan so far and I can try to steer you in the best direction.

+1 for petco with the planning.

I started here in July, didnt put water in a tank until the end of November. My coral plan was slightly different, I made the decision to wait to add coral. Get some saltwater time with fish under my belt before I even started looking at coral.

As for the RO/DI...i made the decision to pass on having my own. I have a 36 gal tank and I can't justify the wastewater. Local big box retail stores have RO water for between 35-47 cents a gal you just have to supply your own container.

Looks like I have some spots of brown Algae on my rocks the tank is starting to Cycle. How long will it take to Clear up so I can add some Snails?

I would go ahead and add your snails and crabs(cleaner crew.) That should take care of the diatom blooms. As for cycling time, each system is different and it depends on how you add livestock.

I would say at least 15 snails and 15 crabs. As many as 30 each depending on what species. A variety is best.
