Yellow tangs are ace algae control... if he's doing that job for you then replace with inverts... maybe tuxedo urchin for something more interesting than snails (find the right shop and they may even trade the tang for a yellow wrasse and a tux urchin)

Yup... just too small. Tangs generally cruise the reef picking off algae in the wild and as such cover vast distances. For a nano you want fish that have a naturally small range (common clowns as an example). Tangs and nanos just don't go. Assuming all goes well with this then upgrade to a 250g and get a decent tang collection... if they float your boat

wow, 250g sound like a lot I will learn with the small one I think for now
You mentioned equipment in your earlier post - can you please maybe give me a list of 'must have' things and what I need to monitor?

Largely depends on what you want... but a basic 'must have' list would include:
Skimmer
Lighting... depends on what you want to keep as to what type
Live rock
Wave maker/ powerhead for flow
Test kits
Refractometer
Heater & thermostat


Most will add one or more of:
Phosphate reducing media (rowaphos as an example)
Activated carbon
Nitrate reducing media

Then there's the stuff you'll use up in water changes / dosing etc:
Synthetic salt mix
*Calcium
*Magnesium
*Alk supplement
*Trace elements
Food

Those with a * you prob don't need to worry about if you're doing decent weekly water changes as they'll be replaced in the new salt water.

You'll need a supply of RO/DI water too for water changes and top off.

Then there's the list of optional stuff... that's for another time tho!

Oh... and a thermometer

I do agree a yellow tang is too large and dirty a fish for a nano tank. It will foul up your water very quickly, crammed-quarters aside.

Honestly with a tank that size I would just buy premixed saltwater from LFS or Petco. Buying a RO/DI wont be cheap and you have to have somewhere to keep it and hook it up. You will only need about 1.4 gallons a week for a 10% water change. A 5 gallon can will last you 3 weeks. As for top off water most LFS would give you that for next to nothing for the amount you need in a biocube.

Yeah, sorry was trying to say you need RODI water as in a source of RODI rather than a RODI unit... hell I've got a 300g and still buy water from my lfs... something about the tank taking over the house is apparently the reason I can't install one... wasn't really listening [emoji6]

Yes. I rarely have to do top offs. The tight lid really limits evaporation. My 10g NUVO loses a shocking amount to evaporation. ATO is my best friend in that tank.

I actually bought it from a friend of mine, so I didn't really have much choice

Water changes are where this hobby begins and ends. Any reefer worth their salt will be the first to tell you water is everything! I was told many years ago when I made the jump from fresh to marine, that water changes solve everything.

Youtube is a great source of information, as well as here, but don't get overwhelmed. Opinions are like jerks as my dad used to say, and everyone has them. You will be bombarded with them, and that is the second peace of advice I will offer, be patient. Take the time to find the pieces of information that work for you. As I said everyone has an opinion, and most are good, but every tank is different. I myself have three, and the things I do on my 250 gallon are things I would never try on my 50 gallon, and likewise with my 10 gallon. So have patience, and take the "good for you" information.
