My husband and I just purchased our first aquarium and decided to go big or go home. While it might seem small by some of your standards, we went with a 60 gallon and are setting it up saltwater. We went into this knowing it wasn't an inexpensive hobby to have, and are apparently learning by trial and error because it seems like every place you ask a question you get a different answer.

For example, one place told us at least a month to prepare the tank, another place told us that as soon as we had the salinity and other elements in line, we could start adding fish. So being the new and excited hobbyists that we are, we promptly ordered fish from an online dealer. We're in Florida, the fish shipped from California. One DOA, and since, we've lost two more from that group. Heartbreaking.... We've replaced the yellow tang that we lost from the first group. One was a fire fish and the third was a blue damsel. We currently have a three striped damsel that seems to have lost its tail fin - I'd guess probably someone is nipping it off, but I haven't actually witnessed the bullying.

We test the water daily and the only element off is the ammonia - which is hovering about 1.5. We've treated it with something to remove the ammonia but have not done a water change yet as we're only about a week in with the fish.

Our water is staying rather cloudy and we're not sure what that is all about.

We have a "cleaning crew" arriving tomorrow. We wanted to get some action going with fish so as not to starve them to death.

Hopefully we're not too far off the grid and just need to tweak a few things.

Thanks for letting us be a part of the group!

Deb and Ron

looks like you jumped the gun a little when setting up the tank... every tank is different and people like to cycle their tanks for different amounts of time i have set up a tank to where i put a fish in immediately but just one fish... then you have to wait a week or two for the cycle to finish (i used bacteria from a bottle to start the cycle) the cycle is over when you no longer have ammonia or nitrite... what type of filtration are you running?

Hello! and Welcome!
Sorry for the hard start on the tank.
A couple questions.
Did you start with live rock and sand or dry?
What are you using for Bacteria and ammoina.
When did you start the tank
how long after did you put in fish.

Did you put the water from the bagged fish in the display?

I would get the water change going ASAP. ten gallons and more will be needed later later
Ammonia is a bad thing for fish. the tank sadly wasn't ready. Bummed about the bad advice.
What your seeing is probably a bacterial bloom maybe.. What youll want to do is make sure the powerheads point to the top of the tank and make bubbles. Youll need to get air in the tank.

Let me introduce you to some of my friends. #reefsquad

An AquaClear power filter, 110v

He ok we're not talking about lights right now. Just kidding I couldn't have said it better then he did ammonia bad esp 1.5 like u said u have. It's ok take it as a learning experience and everyone on this site is going to point u in the right direction so hopefully we make this hobby a lil less inexpensive for ya. Stay strong it can be painful to go thru what u just went thru just learn from ur mistakes and welcome to r2r

We have both live rock and live sand.
I'll have to ask Ron what we are using for bacteria and ammonia
We started the tank about 2.5 weeks ago
We added fish approximately 1 week ago
We did not put the bagged water in when we transferred the fish (and we followed the recommended acclimation instructions from the dealer, who gave us credit for the fish that didn't make it.

Thank you for the encouragement - I needed that! I'm fast be covering a sense of dread when I check the tank - wondering which one fish might be belly up.

Thank you - so far we're enjoying the hobby, but you are correct - painful to watch fish die, especially that Tang. She (of course it's a "she" and her name is Dory! Just ask our 3-year old grandson) was the hardiest looking coming out of the bag, but within 6 hours she started laying down, and when I got up the next morning she was gone.

Welcome to R2R, this is an awesome and addicting hobby, but it can be frustrating when your asking questions and it appears that some of it is incorrect from the LFS. I've been in SW for little over a year and still consider myself a newb. So I ask lots of questions here, read, read and watch you tube videos. (Taught myself a lot from those :D) I'm always learning something new. No question is ever wrong or stupid here so ask away. Oh and we do love pictures:)

I'm sorry about your fishies. Can someone take care of the remaining ones until your tank finishes cycling? That will be when ammonia and nitrites are zero and you only have nitrates. Sounds like you got bad advice. Ask away here. No one is trying to sell you anything and we love to help!

Welcome to Reef2Reef and to a wonderful hobby!

I'm sorry you are getting off to such a rough start due to bad advice. It happens way more often than you may think. :(

I'm guessing you are using Prime to help with the ammonia? If you have a Petco (I think Petsmart carries it also) I would pick up a bottle of Biospira and add it to your tank.

http://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcos...tart-up-nitrifying-bacteria-aquarium-additive

You basically skipped the beginning part of making an aquarium safe for fish by developing a bacteria population, so adding this product will help with that. In my opinion this is the most important step you can quickly take.

You've come to the right place for advice. Sorry that your fish had to suffer due to bad advice. Don't try to add anymore fish for a while. You have a lot of other issues you need to get up to speed on first. This is a perfect site to get help and someone will give you some recommended reading that you need to do. Keep a positive attitude and welcome to the hobby.
