I bought a bunch of the 25 mm pond size and devoted a section of my sump to this. I used a mixture of dead and live rock to cycle my new reef and it worked well.
Where Siporax has really made a difference is in my discus tank. I had a persistent severe algae problem in that tank for years due to the amount of food they need and, I presume, the type of bacterial growth they encourage. That tank ran about 70 ppm NO3 and 1.5 ppm PO4 and there was lush algae growth on the driftwood, walls, etc. I replaced the Ehfisubstrat Pro in one of my Eheim 2217 filters in that tank with the smaller size Siporax and forgot about it. After about 3 months the algae started to abate and is now (about 8 months in) minimal. I have been replacing the Ehfisubstrat Pro in all of my canisters (4) with Siporax as it becomes time to clean them. PO4 is still 1-2 PPM in this tank, but NO3 is steady around 20.
