Mmmmm I was thinking about dosing a few months back. But I figured that would def swing my parameters. So I decided against it. Just WC. Don't think I'm lacking in any trace elements since everything is growing and maintaining color.

i have an LPS tank and I test maybe every month now when I water change but that’s because I am checking nitrate cus I was having an issue with that. I added a few fish so I want to keep it good. I believe if you don’t have very demanding corals like SPS, you can usually tel an issue pretty fast with some corals like Duncan or torch.

I have an alveopora that won't fully extend when it's time for a WC.

It boring if you ask me. Im not looking for the easy way to do everything in life in general. I don't find a static system to be very exciting...

Well if nothing you do every changes and the inhabitants along with everything else in the tank remains the same I guess testing isn't as important. Personally I like to try new things, add new fish and inverts every once in a while, and sometimes even do my own personal little experiments that involve one of my aquariums. I enjoy a dynamic system and love the learning experience that has come from my little experiments and things I've tried in the past.
 
Why not just put in your first post that you do water changes every other day. This is not likely to be cost effective on large tanks nor fun unless you have an auto water changer not to mention waste water from RODI being questionable for the environment.

I don't know why people would say you can't have a nano with frequent water changes. It is done with pico's and nano's all the time. Sounds like facebook nonsense.

You are not testing sure, not saving yourself work or money. It is just a different way of doing something. You are replenishing parameters through water changes instead of dosing is all.

every frag in there costs more than a test kit, and the time it takes to test is minuscule compared to the time it takes to grown out coral.

Lol... !!! Can't tell... people would loose their **** on here. Hmmmm I got a homewrecker that's encrusted over the plug for like 35 or 40 bucks I think... same with the orange passion. Aoi and krak zoa. Like 25 bucks for the space invader. 50 bucks dor the sunkist bounce... let's just say I have a plug. Lol... money isn't an issue. And if it is then you're in the wrooooong hobby... I've learned that fairly quick...

I've tested alk and calcium a couple times since 1976. Lol. No water changes. I dose manually. A few drops of this a cap full of that. Happy fish and coral growth. Keep up the good work!

That's why I said it's not magic like OP made it sound since he could have easily just stated his very simple alternative.

Yeah... but because people see it packed with sps they assume I'm dosing/testing.

I never said anything bad about your tank. I literally said you were off to a nice start.

packed means no room to get your hands in the tank.. at least to me. lots of frags means.. a new tank or a frag tank.

I manually test the following...

Alkalinity - 12 times a day
Calcium - 8 times a day
Magnesium - 4 times a day
pH - 3 times a day
Salinity - 14 times daily
Ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and phosphate - 6 times a day
Iron - just 2x a day
Iodine - 3x a week
ICP test every other day to make sure my test kits are good
I use 6 different thermometers to watch temperature
I just started testing strontium daily as well and will start potassium next week

Let us know how the tank is in 5 years and if you still do water changes every other day. Been at this long enough to know we'll never see that update. Flex posts like this are dime a dozen. The updates are non existent.

PS - I don't test what I said above and I don't do water changes. Tank is in my build thread.
 
Just to point out… it’s not the testing of the tank that gets reefers in to trouble… it’s overreacting fast to the test results. Knowing where you are at is different than chasing parameters
