so the copper safe will be here tomorrow, but right now everyone looks great (minus the white spots) as is eating.

Can i assume its ich? Doesnt velvet progress much quicker?

It could be... typically velvet moves really fast, though with some species it can be a drawn out thing. Going with the copper, it will take care of both anyway.

Alright then, one more question:

How adversely does copper affect the biofilter? I was planning on using a sponge filter that has been sitting in my sump for a while.

If the nitrifying bacteria is well established inside the sponge, the impact from copper will be minimal. However, if you try to dump live nitrifying bacteria into a QT which has already been dosed with copper, most of the bacteria will die before it ever reaches the sponge. Being embedded inside the sponge insulates some of the bacteria from annihilation, and the survivors quickly adapt and repopulate.

How slow should I go with the copper dosage? What ppm is 5mL per 4 gallons?

With Coppersafe dosing 1 teaspoon (5ml) per 4 gallons typically lands you somewhere within the therapeutic range for that product (1.5 - 2.0 ppm). However, I would take 3-4 days, and slowly raise it up to that level.

Bit of an update:

Going a lot slower on the copper dosing, but it looks like one of the clowns and the angel are becoming less receptive to food.

The white spots have only gotten more numerous and stayed small in size, so I think I'm dealing with velvet.

Seeing some head twitching and faster breathing from the angel. Maybe flukes?

How do angels handle freshwater dipping? Formalin (I only have quick cure)?

both ick and velvet can cause breathing problems due to fluid build up as their body tries to deal with the parasites. A fresh water dip can help flush out some of that fluid out of the gills and help them breath a little better. They handle it the same as most other fish... I've dipped my fair share and haven't noticed a difference between them and dipping any other fish.

Interesting. I'll do a freshwater dip real quick then, then a water change.

Can I use tap water and dechlorinator? We have really hard water that's at like pH 8

You can, but I never have. It's preferable to use RODI

You can use tap (with a dechlorinator). Just be sure the temp matches the water you are taking the fish from, and I would also aerate the water for 30 mins beforehand.

The angel responded well to the dip.

However, this morning he is not eating and does a wierd thing with his lips when approaching food.

I am only halfway on the full copper dose. What do I do? Wait? remove the copper? try something else?

edit: ate a couple of small pieces of mysis but is eating nothing like before. I have to leave now but when I get home I will do another large water change just in case.

I would stop raising the Cu until he's eating better. Give him time to adjust to it.

I did a 90% water change as it looks as if I am having ammonia problems. LFS tested .025. I have the badge, looked a little greenish but I wanted to be sure.

Put in another sponge filter, and replaced the coppersafe that was lost. May have to buy some denitrifying bacteria.

Those liquid test kits will have issues when running copper. Adding a bacteria in a bottle product will always be helpful.

The angel seems interested in food but when it tries to eat it stars doing a rapid puckering motion with its mouth, is this happening because of the copper or is there something else going on?

He's probably losing some of his appetite from the copper exposure. Have you tried a little garlic in the food to make it more appetizing?

Tried some reef caviar and a piece of half shell clam, no go. Ordered garlic xtreme, it will be here Tuesday.

Other than not eating, the angel is very perky. Hope the garlic works.
