Im sure most of you have heard many of the devasting problems ive had and always try to find good out of bad or at least dont let things get me down.Wellthis one has me pretty upset and need to know the validity of this delima.Ive been wanting and researching the golden angle for quite some time and have been trying to get everything just right before i purchase one.i just found a current article about them that greatly disturbes me.they were first discovered in the 70s when collectors were useing cyanide to harvest.they are still so secrective and deep water they are still collected with chemicles and poisions.i cant buy a liveing creature caught in this manner and its really one fish i truly want.can someone please tell me this is untrue or if they know of a collector i can contact that collects them humanly.since my tank is completly empty and cleaned setting it up for one would b no problem but will give up on that dream if what they say is happening.Ill have no choice.can anyone out there tell me anything positive .thanks for listening and any help would be greatly appreaciated

Ya I have heard rumors that cyanide is still used here and there unfortunately. To avoid that you should be looking into captive bred fish (I'm guessing your angel would be a no go)

Live Aquaria has them for sale right now. I don’t believe that they have their fish caught with cyanide. Link
Your confident they don't use chemicals? Can you link me to that info?

I believe this would cover something like the use of cyanide right? Because that poisons the fish and the environment, and I highly doubt that cyanide collection is lawful anywhere. If LiveAquaria actually follows the standards that it claims it follows, I should not think that any of their fish or livestock were harvested with the use of harmful poisons or chemicals :)

Unfortunately terms like "responsibly harvested" and the like are very generic and don't convince me. All of that just sounds like lawyer talk to cover their bases without actually specifically stating that they are against anything in particular.

Idk, I feel like cyanide fishing is probably illegal, which means that live aquaria would be unable to sell those fish with these policies in place. The fish does have the 14 day warranty on it though so if you suspect cyanide you can open a claim with them as long as it’s within those 14 days

It is illegal in many places, but I believe it's still legal in some places (sorry, it's late and I'm not gonna do to much research right now). The issue isn't that they will die right away (well alot actually do well before you buy them), it's that they have reduced lifespans. They can still live for a while. If they were all obviously sickly and being returned then I bet that fishing method would have never took hold.

What about blue zoo aquatics? Looks like they have them in stock from time to time. I think I’d feel safer about buying this angel from Diver’s Den instead of LiveAquaria because then I know that it’s doing okay and the picture is wysiwyg. It also says they do better in pairs?? (blue zoo) I’ve never heard that about a dwarf angel

There is no way to 'guarantee' a fish has been harvested in a certain way - except to find an LFS you trust - and go that way - of course the few varieties of tank raised fish will not be harvested that way - and I believe that most fish now are not harvested with cyanide. One way to be a little more sure - is to ask your LFS to monitor your fish (after you place a deposit) for some period of time 2 weeks - 3 weeks - it seems to me that most cynanide caught fish die within a short period - or are not eating, will look bad etc.

Unfortunately as much as I would love to believe what they are referencing is that they don’t accept cyanide collected fish, the fact that they very specifically do not reference those methods as no goes screams lawyer speak to me. This is why the difference in price between something like a golden angel and an Interruptus is so distinct. There are very few people in the industry accepted as collectors for those while goldens, while not collected as deep, are still very cryptic deeper water fish are collected in MUCH higher numbers. If you’d like I can ask my husband to put his feelers out for humane collectors that can possibly get you one. I feel it necessary to add, these collectors are much smaller time and tend to have higher prices for the fish they collect. @rusty hannon please pm me and let me know.

Hmmm...I've heard good things about AmongTheReef, seems like they have access to a large amount of cryptic deep water species. Might be worth reaching out to them about sourcing a fish, and asking them about their cyanide policy.

An important thing to note, is that the supply chain can get weird. With the shallow water fish, you can have individuals collecting the fish, and selling them to holding facilities, which ship to more "local" distributors, who can then either ship to wholesalers, or directly to retailers. That's a long supply chain, and information (like, were they collected with cyanide?) can "easily" get lost...

And that's not getting into deep water fish, which I assume are less prone to being collected with cyanide, since they're more expensive anyways. If the fish is going to be collected at deeper depths, and your fish always die due to being collected with cyanide, you're eventually just going to lose business, and money.

While I couldn’t agree with this more, there are collectors out there that ship direct to either the end buyer or to a facility at that buyers request for QT and conditioning.

  1. Im sorry but I don't know what pm stands for.thank you for your information and although it will take me a little while to reset my tank I would re aly like to have a golden angel.I'm not a collector but if I'm honest here that fish represents someone .thank you again
