Hey everyone, I've been reading through the reef2reef forums for a few months and have finally ordered and set up my new tank.

I ordered my first tank and it was shattered upon arrival, and out of stock. I returned that and ordered a new one from a different website...glad its finally set up.

I went to my lfs well the best one in my area...about 25 minutes away... and saw they sold life rock by the pound and picked out my rocks (about 25 lbs worth).

Built my own tank stand, not finished (going to add a really cool type of wood with magnets to cover the giant hole).

Started my tank 9/26/18, with live sand: ocean direct, dry rock: life rock shapes, biospora and Dr.tims ammonia chloride.

Equipment:

Nuvo fusion 40
Tunze 9004 dc protien skimmer
Tunze Osmolator 3155
In Tank media basket
Cobalt 150w heater
AI Hydra 26
AI HMS Mount
IM Spinstream x 2
IM Fishguard x 2
IM DIY Aquarium Mat
Santa Monica drop 1.2x
Buying a Nero5 powerhead this friday

Bunch of miscellaneous onesies and twosies.

Thanks for looking and hope to hear from some of you guys as well as learn, this seems to be an amazing forum to join.

looks good.be careful with that flipper magnet, that is a large one and could easily break that glass. also, make sure you keep those lights off until everything fully cycles and that bacteria gets a hold on those rocks.

Welcome to R2R!!! Looks great so far!

Welcome to R2R, very nice tank:)

Great do-it-yourself work and welcome to the hobby. Tank is off to a nice start. PLEASE TELL ME THE TANK THOUGH, IS NOT AT OR CLOSE TO A WINDOW?? If so, you will endure UV sun rays, and fluctuating temperature, thermal cold during winter and Algae issues galore.

hOLA! Welcome. Love the rockwork!

edit: Looks like theres not enough hiding places in the rockwork?

It is...really the only spot in the apartment that it could go, but theres a huge awning off of it wich stops direct light from entering...just indirect lighting...I know not optimal but we have to do what we have to do...if it gets too bad I guess I'll have to rearrange and figure out a different spot. Thank you!!!

Thanks!!! Well it's only a 40 gallon...more like 34 after everything, but the pictures arent the greatest, theres got to be 12 different caves of different sizes throughout should be plenty for 4 or 5 fish, I'll deffinetly keep you updated!

i have my im40 next to a window not by choice either. late in the day some sun comes in and the zoas and palys love it. i have no algae,no skimmer,no carbon and no gfo, and no problems. i do weekly water changes and feed once a day a small amount of food.

You can also take the side that faces window and use Black Construction paper from Walmart at .97 cents. Works well at filtering light away from tank.

Hell yea that's awesome!!!

So question guys and gals,

I have an Intank media basket, what should I put in there...I know floss for the top but what should I put in the other two...and should I wait for the need for such filtration before putting it in there? ... I've just been using the filter sock that came with for the cy le to try and keep it clean.

Why would yo leave your lights off during the cycle?

I have always run mine on a normal schedule.

Gets algae going! First sign of life.

Not sure either way is right or wrong, I just see no sense in delaying things if you don’t have to.

i have the same 3 stage media basket you have on one side and their single on the other side. the only thing i use is their white/blue filter pad in the top of each one. you only need to use carbon/gfo or anything else if you are having problems. stock light, feed small amounts and keep up with water changes. make sure your fish are nano sized also. by the way, the one side of your tank looks like there is a weiner sticking out of the rock. lol.

your probably the only one who would leave there lights during cycling. once algae takes hold it is difficult to beat. this is why so many people quit this hobby after 6 months. let the bacteria colonies take hold. nothing good comes from rushing mother nature.

I’m not sure where you get your information. Lights on is a very normal part of the cycle. It’s not a matter of rushing anything. It’s about getting the tank up and running and established. Algae is easy to defeat.

Nuisance algae is rather easy to control as well.

I’m not sure where you get that people get out of the hobby because of algae problems after 6 months either?

my info comes from every book and video that was made on setting up a new tank. light is a normal part of a mature system. algae is not easy to defeat by some one with no experience with it. i am done going back and forth with someone with your intellect. your a waste of my time.
