Hey All-
My new tank has been running since 9/26. For some reason with this skimmer I simply can’t get the bubbles to rise to the top of the neck. It does skim, just doesn’t all make it to the cup. When I close the air it puts microbubibles in the tank. When I open the air, bubbles in tank are gone but that’s the skim level In the pic. Had much cheaper skimmers that were better unfortunately. Any suggestions ?

Thanis

Looks like it's in about 9" of water which is about where I run my 160.

I run the air almost all the way open, have the large adjustment wide open using just the knob to control water level.
Here are pics Ive shared with others using my old 120 for a better view.

Make sure you have the hole on the bottom of the long tube lined up with hole in skimmer. Also NYOS usually have to be primed by leaving it running and lift the whole skimmer out of the water, drain out whatever water is In it. Then just stick back in the water.

It should be in 8" of water (but check the manual for the 120 to be sure), give or take a bit. I would set the fine adjustment at the mid way point, then adjust the course flow (big tube) until the bubbles hit the neck joint. Usually you'll turn the course flow away from the skimmer to raise the level, when you get close, then you can adjust the fine adjustment. Also, make sure the inlet is unobstructed. The air should be wide open. If bubbles are filling below the plate, be patient, they'll go away after a few days or a week? It depends on the organic waste that's available. Newer tanks may take longer than established tanks.

Also, looking at your picture, I would rotate or move the skimmer away from the side wall. The inlet is too close to the wall. Open your air too, it looks partially closed.

Thanks Y’all. What’s does that mean hole on bottom lined up with hole in skimmer?
The long tube that has the bigger knob has a hole in it at the bottom & there is a hole in the skimmer body (Middle Pic that Scurvy sent) they need to line up.

Just to be clear to the OP, this is the starting point. If the water level is low, then you need to turn the tube clockwise, essentially closing off the water outlet in order to raise the internal water level. Having the hole/tube lined up allows more water to exit the skimmer and lowering the internal water level. Hopefully this all makes sense? Keep us posted.

Howdy

I have a nyos. Hated it for years until I got it tuned.

My thought right now is you may just not have enough to skim. If it is 2 weeks old it will not need a skimmer yet. Has the tank been cycled and what do you have it.

That would be a good starting point

Thanks guys for all the input. Im still confused on the holes that need to line up. I don’t see that anywhere It’s obviously me. The tank is newly cycled but is stocked with corals, inverts, and fish so there are things to skim. It is skimming but not reaching the cup. I’ve tried raising and lowering the water in the sump, The air is wide open and turning the big knob does absolutely nothing either way.

Your tank is new, so there's not much for it to skim. Also, it takes a while for any skimmer to build bio film in the chamber and break in. As I mentioned earlier, rotate your skimmer a little to allow more space in front of the inlet/venturi. You should have at least 2" of clearance. What's your salinity? Give it time and you'll see that these do a really good job of skimming.

Honestly just give it some time and dont fuss with it. Can take a bit to build up a layer of biofilm and operate flawlessly.

Id open up the air line quite a bit more and leave it be. I ran a 120 exactly as Ive shown for almost 3 years in 8” of water and it was almost an after thought once dialed in. Then upgraded to a 160 in 9” of water running almost identically to the 120 and aside from cleaning the cup I just need a slight adjustment to water level when the seasons change.

That big knob is the tube that has the hole at the bottom it that should line up with hole at the base of the main skimmer body. Scurvy showed it to you. Open the air knob (Little one) all the way & close off the water knob (Big one). With your skimmer being new it's going to take awhile to get it right. Just remove the cup & let it run.
