NYOS Salt

I’ve been ecstatic with the product I received. The levels are exactly what I want. How are you liking it so far?

Working great for me and my Acropora reef. I switched from Red Sea Blue Bucket, which is great salt as well. The largest different I've seen is my Nitrates and Phosphates have dropped to nothing and I'm having to dose those.

Red Sea has some phosphates in it, not a lot, but I had to really try to reach low phosphates using that salt. Corals are doing very well on the salt too. Just a really clean, pure salt and I don't see myself changing anytime soon.

Ok, so my three 20kg bags came in yesterday. I'll do my weekly water change this weekend.

Initial thoughts, I haven't opened the bag yet, but the salt seems very fine and loose. The bags are very fluid in movement. Some salt bags I've had before seem stiff and almost hard with the salt in consistency.

The label has the ICP results. All three of my bags share the exact same parameters as they are all from the same batch, November 2022.

The DKH is a bit lower than I like and I thought it would be around 8.5 from all I read, but it's good and I can work with that number.

Here is the ICP report and bag pics. I liked the "Store use only, not for resale". Well, they resold .

I wonder if NYOS stopped selling the 'not for resale' bags to distributors? I've noticed no one has the bags for sale, only buckets...which are $10 higher (at BRS anyway). I was out, so had to pony up the $10 difference this time.

Haha, I noticed that too when I received my 3 bags. Seems like freebies they received and selling them.

Just opened the two buckets I ordered from BRS to prepare for my first water change with nyos. Both buckets of salt are rock hard, so first impression is a little bit of a let down. Having read nothing but great reviews I wanted to give it a try. Will report back with feedback and results.

Curious to see if anyone else ordered the buckets and if theirs were rock hard too. Is this something I should be concerned about?

I'm a former Tropic Marin user and ever since the turkey debacle I've been looking for something to switch to permanently - this process has not been fun.

Thanks!

Maybe a hole or two in the bag by chance? Reach out to BRS and they’ll send out new buckets ASAP

I didn't notice any.. should I not use it? I was able to scrape it to get it pretty powdery, though there are some clumps.

Would you use it?

I’m using Pure Nyos from April and I’m very satisfied. Very good values of Kh and calcium, it is very clean and fast to melt.

Just had one delivered last week and the bucket was fine from BRS.

Maybe a hole. Still useable. I'd send Nyos a message tho. They'd probably want to hear about it.

I'm loving it..nitrates and phosphates went down. Mixes fast and parameters are on par with the bucket. Coming from red sea blue bucket. Wish it was a little cheaper, but very good salt

Seems like it's a good salt, it's just pricey and doesn't come with that higher dKh that some might want

Any more long term updates? I just purchased a bucket to test out on my new tank.

Well, since switching I have a HORRIBLE outbreak of GHA and I lost some Acropora colonies that I've grown for almost a year. Still can't discern why as nothing changed. It sure seemed like bacterial or nutrients, except nutrients were perfect.

Can I blame it on the salt? Probably not, but it is interesting.

I’m new here and new to reefing. I have biocube32 and have used NYOS salt for three months now, water is really clean and no residue in bucket and mixes in less than hour. Getting ready to install my mixing station where I’ll mix 30 gallons at time and see how it holds up.

Interesting. Maybe some kind of trace element. I’ve heard theories that people have things getting into their natural source water column during the summer due to people fertilizing and watering more in the summer months. It’s something I never considered till recently.

Yeah I saw a video on that from WWC and a guy in Texas, I believe has that theory. Not sure about that, but it's certainly a interesting theory.

Thinking more about it, I've ways thought there was something about different source water. You see these people with BEAUTIFUL systems that grown like crazy and they hardly touch them. Then, sometimes there is a system that is run by a seasoned vet that has all sorts of loses.

I have a 7 stage system and I'm not sure our RODIs remove everything like they should.

Is it at least a nice bucket?

I’d have to agree with that.
