NYOS Salt

What size system for a 44g water change? Did you test the new water before doing the water change? Anytime salt comes in hard or clumped, it needs to be tested before use.

To ease any worry, your mag and alk drop aren't going to cause any issues. Especially when you consider magnesium test kits have a +-50ppm margin of error. You are well within that. Plus magnesium is one element you can almost never worry about. 1200, 1300, 1400, doesn't really matter. It only matters when it really starts dropping and then it messes with calcium and alkalinity stability.
Its a 200g with 140G-150G water volume. I didn’t test my water before water change like i mentioned im new,and learning, and i honesty freaked out when i first seen the mag, and alk. Its not a big deal. But with all honesty i prefer salt with higher alk, and high mag, calc, right off the bet. I dont want to waste my time dosing at 2 months. And no hate to NYOS

You will have to dose no matter what, just as a heads up. There is no benefit to higher alkalinity in my experience. I run and have run my alkalinity at 7-7.5dkh for more than 15 years. Higher alkalinity salts all have drawbacks IMO.

True. I just found the mag for mt lps system bit low? Like why would the batch says 8 alk, and 1300 mag and we got less than that? Or that sticker is for the whole batch and not specifically for that salt bucket

It’s for the batch but if salt clumps up it can change the parameters

Natural seawater is like 1240 for magnesium

The only benefit to higher alkalinity is when you can replace alk consumption with water changes
Otherwise, I think there is no benefit whatsoever to high alk - in fact I think you run the risk of alk shocking new coral arrivals that may be used to 7-8 if they get dropped in a 9-11 dKH tank.

I havent tested that - it's just a hypothesis.

I bought 3 buckets and they all had the same problem, having to use a hammer to get the salt back to normal! If you want, I'll make a video!
Update: the new buckets i received from BRS are mixing very smoothly was able to mix a 44G for tomorrows water changes in less than a min fine powder.

Mine was the same....actually worst. I used it anyways. No issues other than low mag..... wondering if my trace elements is also low lol

Season 5 Idk GIF by Friends
Mine was the same. My alk was 7.0, my calcium is 410-400 according to salifert, and mag is 1260. One is low usually all low. The new one i got mixed super easy and it was super fine. Mixed today less than a min. Tomorrow ill confirm the parameters in the brute before doing the water changes and ill update my post

It’s usually a good rule of thumb that if all major elements are low, your salinity is low. Not always but it’s a good chance to double check your refractometer and even get a 2nd opinion if you have someone close you trust

I have hanna, milwaukee, and hydrometer. Hanna is off 0.2. I didnt calibrate it in a while. Milwaukee is off by one. Confirmed by ICP. And of course you cant beat the hydrometer which was dead on 1.025 with temp conversion

I'm pretty solid in the SG department. I always do a 5 gallon bucket for fresh saltwater. I used the measured cups and use the same amount every time, followed by a check with the Tropic Marin Hydrometer, followed by the Milwaukee digital salinity checker.

After i verify the SG with that method ....I just use my Milwaukee for the rest of the batch.

My milwaukee is very impressive when i compare it to my hydrometer its off by 1 not bad at all

Nyos update. Like i mentioned yesterday im going to do testing on the parameters today. Before doing the water change. Used salifert. And i did the test over 5 times for each test for testing error. And accuracy. Here are the results mag still testinf 1260-1280 with salifert. Low i have no clue why. Alk hanna and salifert hanna 8.2 and salifert 8.3. Calcium 430-440. I rinsed the viles for more than 20 times to confirm those results. Im going to increase the mag to match my tank. But so far not impressed with their mag. It says the whole batch is 1337. And im testing lower than that.

My issue is not the hard pebble salt brs fixed that . But the low mag. I tested over 5 times for salifert 1260-1280. Calciu’m im getting 430-450 accurate and alk 8.2 and salifert is 8.3 why mag is low though

Our reply was to another user in this thread reporting solidified salts.

Titrations tests have a variance of +/- 50ppm, and there is natural margin of error in ICP testing as well. Unless you are doing large water changes in excess of 50% or more you likely won't see a change in your Magnesium in the tank itself. If there is concern about this you can also contact our support team as well and we can work with Nyos to find out why there is a discrepancy between your results and the ICP results from their batch.
