You placed your ring on the skimmer because it was a good place to put it while you had your hands in the tank due to the fact that metals react to salt water causing ionic inbalances within the water colum in an enclosed enviroment? Or you didn't want to take a chance of loosing it somewhere in your tank that you had to move anything to get it.

So the ring is yours, and the skimmer is involved.

My guess is the following.

You set this skimmer up recently. Maybe in the last couple weeks/months. It looks fairly new. When you set up the skimmer, you lost your wedding band. You prob never put 2 and 2 together and it's been lost for some time now. You prob don't clean the cup to often and just found the ring, thus the happy ending! This is prob the picture you took when you found it and sent it to your wife.
