Ok folks what is it!!??!!

Left the tank running with about 1/3 cup of bleach running in the system. I will do follow up flushing etc... not taking any chances of it going haywire on me

When you empty it, you can either let it dry completely OR run it through with tap and plenty of Prime (or an equivalent of that) to make sure the bleach is completely neutralized.

You did save a sample, right?

Sorry bro smoked it.
My wife came down to the fish room and freaked!

It's all toasty now.

I will probably do all the above and then some! Dump it , dry it , dump it , dry it, prime it , dump it and then fill.

Lol ya I probably shouldn't have even touched it but I did! Lol [emoji23]

Never seen anything like it and hope I never do again! In all honesty I think it was either some weird freshwater algae or cotton candy algae?? I'm not totally sure though. Usually bacteria is slimy etc.... this was not.

Craziest thing I've seen in many years for sure!

yeah that looks slimy on that filter sock. So gross. I still say you have something nasty in your tap water. Might be worth looking into, or at least checking up on any filters ya'll use for your drinking water and making sure they are up to snuff.

A couple weeks ago I did the same thing you did minus the fish tank heater but I only ran the tank for less than a week. I went in the garage to see if there was any red on the filter sock. All I saw was two dead crickets.

I never seen that stuff in our freshwater planted tanks. We use tap water in them.
Back in the day I used tap water for my FOWLR with a conditioner:rolleyes::D this is definitely a strange one but look up fresh water algae and the link is what I cam up with.

I hope you saved some! I see you hit it with bleach. Be cautious as bleach and vinegar is not a good mixture.

I sent you another pm

Yes the bleach and vinegar combo can be very bad so the tank has been drained after running a couple of hours.

I had about 3 cups of vinegar, 150 gallons of water and about 1/3 cup bleach in it.

Did give off some chlorine fumes but not horrible.

Drained it all out and it is now empty. I will be following up with lots of fill/flushes and prime . Also will be doing wipe downs in between.

Just for the record, weird red stuff aside, Bleach breaks down rapidly in water. You will rid the tank of it faster by filling with water and letting sit, preferable in a well lit area. I clean everything in bleach water and then one rinse in fresh water afterwards, then dry. No long term bad effects. Most people are afraid of bleach, but regular bleach(no other additives) is actually a great way to keep bad stuff away. Just sayin.

So true! I may be one of the few who actually has dosed bleach ;)

When I filled the 58gallon that thing literally smelled like my parents spa with how strong the chlorine was. I was surprised that was all in the tap.. We have a water softener but that was before it kicked in.

We have a whole home water filter at point of entry ... i always forget how chlorinated our water really is until I go to my parents' house and use the sink ... the chlorine is so strong!

Ok that's weird! Perhaps a species of bacteria in the genus Nocardia. These will sometimes grow on your shower head and is sort of Orange and maybe a little waxy. I'm sure the vinegar has to be the carbon source. Not sure how you will be able to get rid of it. Perhaps treat the tank with an antibiotic. Check out https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nocardia

Good luck!
Fred
