OK, the ich ordeal is almost over-

Just remember garlic does not cure ich it only helps build your fish's immune system to help fight it off. With that said yes the Powder could have introduced it into the system which is why you should have a quarantine tank setup for new fish. Stray voltage you can "try" putting one of the leads of a meter into the water and the other on a ground source (like a copper water pipe) and if you have a lot of voltage than yes its bad. You will never get rid of stray voltage in a tank, however, without a grounding probe. But with a grounding probe you should only use it when your in the tank cause otherwise you may never know there was truly a problem.

I know (garlic isn't a cure) and tangs carry the ich, right? I don't have a quarantine tank, but the fish would be stressed going from the quarantine tank to the main tank anyway, wouldn't it. Maybe it would be over the initial stress from being caught/shipped, but it would still be stressed.

Use the grounding probe when I'm checking the tank makes sense (might have to run it out the window to the ground since out the window is closer than sinks to my tank (and I don't think we have copper piping anyway). I don't need some kind of grounding probe all the time, do I? And if I don't have a stray current in the tank, I wouldn't need the grounding probe when I'm doing things in the tank anyway, would I? Sorry, I'm not sure what you are telling me.

You always want to use a grounding probe, but you also want to periodically check to see if you have any stray voltage. The grounding probe will give a path for the voltage to flow through rather than it having no ground path which is were it can do more damage. If things look like they are stabilizing then keep a close eye, if you notice anymore new issues let us know.

wrong

Use of a grounding probe 100% of the time means you wont know there is a problem till it crash's and it will crash thus possibly killing EVERYTHING in your tank. Use of a grounding probe will you are in the tank working, however, will keep you from getting electrecuted should there be a problem. If there is a problem with electricity otherwise you will know because things will begin to act differently all of a sudden. Either way you can use the ground part of an electrical outlet for the ground and stick the other probe into the tank (i am talking about checking stray voltage using a multimeter now). I would saying something below 2-3 volts should be normal without a grounding probe.

Did I just read correctly that you think 2-3 volts is acceptable?

no I said less than. You will want as close to 0 as possible but it will NEVER happen. Besides its not the voltage that will kill you but the amps.

I agree with ofblong on this one..

Its kinda like the bird on the high voltage power line, no ground the bird is fine.

is that why the sign says high voltage?

And yes i do have a ground probe, but it is in a GFCI outlet which will pop if anything goes to the ground.

I think it is good as long as it is plugged into a GFCI outlet.

If it is plugged into a normal wall outlet it is bad.

That said i'll also say i'm not an expert on the subject and am just going by what i researched when i decided to add one to my system.

Well, I hope it's about done. Lost the yellow fin tomini today and the blue carpet bit the dust. He was moving and got wedged and I'm not sure if he was on his way out and just not moving around or whether he got stuck and that did him in. I was gone over the weekend and I moved him, but he looked bad. Today he was obviously starting to decompose, so I took him out and he's graced the back yard. He wasn't stinking too bad yet....

Everything else looks ok except my rose nem has now decided to climb up the big hammer (from Bryan). What a silly thing. I have the hammer wedged pretty good, so I don't think he'll knock the big coral over, but that will sure bum me out if he does....

Susan I really think someone needs to come by and test for problems, There has got to be something majorly wrong. You are losing way to much stuff to be coinsidence, and you are still losing stuff so something still isnt right.
