Here are some of the equipment that I used before ,getting ready to start over soon .Everything still works perfectly after 20 years of use.

Metal halide lamps and chiller are the two most expensive to run.

Ya but I am sure the skimmer pump and Cal. reactor pump is not too far behind.
If you factor in everything yes .
Here's a couple of close-up pictures of the pumps, lights ,and chiller .

I see the little Giant pumps aren't any less efficient than most of the ac pumps on the market.

As far as the closed loop, thats good....I would suggest that would be the 1 place that would be better to move to any one of the newer propeller powerheads for water movement.

Are you going to get this wet soon?

I'm still looking for anything above that's old school? Where's the metal framed aquarium, big leather diaphragm pumps, and whale oil lamps... That's all awesome equipment perfect suitable today. That's back when (most) everyone followed what was preached and didn't look for cheap knocks offs and bought once. ;)

(fyi, I still don't always follow that rule. :p )

I wish I had a time machine! Ricordia colonies for $40. No microscopic stupidly-named frags, heck no frags at all for that matter. Incredible fresh live rock from Walt Smith in Fiji. Monstrous downdraft skimmers that produced 5g buckets of rank skimmate. Iwaki. Iwasaki. Tunze stuff was brown. Ebo Jagers were green. People read books. Those were the days!

hopefully in a month or two I will get it running .my return pump is :
Gorman-Rupp model #14520-304
Flow Rate: Range to 27 gpm (1620 gph) approx Fluid Temperature: to 203 F (95 C) Pump Shaft: Ceramic Impeller Bearings: Resin Impregnated Carbon Front Thrust Bearings: Glass-Filled Teflon Rear Thrust Bearings: Ceramic Voltage: 115V Frequency: 50/60Hz Current: 2.1/2

I was thinking of replacing it with the new
Ecotech Vectra M1 DC return pump . From what I've been reading it's more efficient and very quiet . What are you think ?

I think they are very quiet and efficient. I also think all dc pumps have a bigger chance for failure. I personally just switched back to a good old mag 18 because my 3rd failed. Admittedly 2 were jebao junk but 1 was supposed to be a decent brand.

Back when I first started my live rock was shipped to me and I had to go pick it up at the airport . My wife thought I was crazy .I don't remember the source exactly where I had ordered the rocks but they were from the Marshall islands and Fiji , 150 pounds . I don't remember what I had paid but one thing for sure is they were expensive .

OK maybe I'll stick to what I already have
