Orion's 8gal Nuvo

FYI, they are now using a piece of glass that mounts half way from the bottom of the filter side to resolve the silicone issue, just got mine replaced with the 2nd gen model and it's pretty good. I'm replacing the stock pump with a 600 maxijet.

Yep, an herbal treatment. I'll be sure to report back here if it's effective or not.

A friend of mine in CT used it and reported fairly good success with it although he did loose a few fish but that may have been due to the fact that he started the treatment too late IMO based on my phone conversations with him. Hope it works out for you.

A few more spots of ich have appeared on the black clownfish. The orange has a couple more as well on its upper fin. If the Ich Attack is working then these new ich spots were attached to the fish before treatment started 3 days ago.
Both fish are still acting normal so that's a good thing. Continuing to double dose the tank, and feed them good food.

As a side note purigen and CPE were both removed before treatment started.

If they were from before then obviously it is arresting it from spreading ... which is +1 of course ... Hopefully no other fish will get infected and that would definitely be a sign that this new kind of treatment is working and that no copper treatments are necessary. That is a +1 for sure.

Thanks for the info, Albert. The clowns are still acting normal as well as eating a ton.

Update on the ich - had a few spots of ich pop up over the weekend on the clowns, but all spots are now gone as of today. I don't think I am out of the woods yet, so I will continue double dosing the tank every day. Corals and inverts are still accounted for with no losses.

Great to hear!

Looks like it is working for you and am glad to read it ... also nice that there no negative effect on the corals and other life forms. Hopefully it kills their reproductive stage off as well so you will be out of the woods very soon. Do keep us posted please and thanks for the update.

My wife looked into the tank this morning, and we lost both clownfish overnight. Not sure if the ich got both of them, or if there was a spike of something else(nitrate, etc). Corals look just fine as well as the inverts though. Won't be able to check parameters until I get home this evening.
In any case my plan is to do a big water change tonight when I get home, and reinsert the purigen/CPE.

I have read elsewhere that I need to let the tank sit for 8 weeks with no fish in order for the ich to die off. Anyone know if this is true?

Sorry to read about the losses. I do not think it is the nitrate level but more than likely the ick that was in their gills and basically got them unfortunately. Yes a water change and checking parameters is what I would recommend as well as you suggest. It could be that something else died and created an ammonia and/or nitrite spike and that is what got to the clowns. Hard to tell at this point, and sorry about the losses

Thanks Albert.
May not get home now until midday tomorrow, but I'm sure it will all be fine. I did a water change 4 days ago.

You are welcome and I hope all goes well indeed. Be safe with all this weird weather we are having all over the Country. Do post an update when you get back. Thanks.

Water parameters all checked ok, and water change done. Now the waiting period begins...
In the mean time I'll add corals to the reef, and keep feeding the inverts.

Pleased to read all is OK now ... and yes when everything stabilizes I guess you can add some corals and if you need suggestions on which ones to add do not hesitate to ask. If you have decided on some already and you need info feel free to ask any questions you may have

Update with pictures -

Water is crystal clear again with purigen and CPE back in the sump. One green sinularia is hunched over, but the other is up. Everything else is looking great and growing!

Will coralline algae form on its own, or does it have to be introduced into the aquarium?

Looking real good and glad to read that you are having the water quality under control !

On the coralline : you need to seed the tank with some rock that already has coralline algae on it or you need to get scrapings of real coralline algae and add those to the tank. LFS should have rock with coralline on it ... you do not need a large piece just one that has a good deal of coralline algae on it. Just place it in the tank, keep your calcium levels up and soon they will start to grow and once they do they grow everywhere. They like plastic and power cords too :-) but you will see them on your rock as well. Sometimes they start off as a greenish color that turns into the typical dark red or pink that you normally see in pictures.

Hope this helps but if you need more info do let me know. Tks

Thanks for the info on the coralline. Not sure if I actually want to seed the tank with it. Looks like it can be a pain to keep under control once it gets going! On the other hand, it does make a reef tank look complete.

Thinking of getting a torch coral to put behind the GSP. I also have 5 more ricordia on order through a group buy. Will place those on the middle left rock.

Also, the Acan is currently placed in the sand under medium flow. Seems to be doing ok. Is this the best place for it?

Yes a small Torch is OK IMO. Moderate light medium flow. Just make sure it is not close to anything it can sting as at night it can extend sweeper tentacles that can sometimes be several inches long. Acans like low flow and moderate light but the flow as to be enough so no detritus or uneaten food that falls on them settles and does not get removed by the flow as if it decomposes it can cause tissue necrosis. And on the Ricordea middle to low levee .. are you getting R yuma or R florida? Placement would be the same. Not too strong current either.
