I have an outbreak of tiny white bugs.. First they were covering just back of the glass. Now they are everywhere!
Tried to take pictures but it does not come out at all I would say most of them are oval shape? Yet some are round but almost to tiny to even see...
I believe some of them to be Copepods because I have seen them in my tank but since I can't make all of them out I am not sure if there that or something else...or could be a combination of two different things?

The fish sometimes eat them off the glass.. Is that a good guide to assume that it's a desirable pod?

I thought they were disappearing because they seemed to be only a few hundred this morning there is thousands! It seems sometimes there are more and sometimes they're less.. The sizes vary also. So even the largest one does not come out in the picture except of the little egg shape...

90% of what I found on a search says Copepods or amphpods of course I did find a couple of people saying it's snails having babies was they are very tiny some creature develops from overfeeding! Definitely don't want some weird creature in my tank!!
Do I need to worry about any of that? And how do I know? Can I tell once and for all what it is?
Can I assume it's okay because the Fish are eating it because they wouldn't eat some other kind of nasty bug? Right?

Can people who have had this experience please let me know?

As a sidenote when my tank first cycle a while back I had an outbreak but it went away within a day or two and I've had nothing until this weekend and my tank is about 10 weeks old. Water parameters are good The exception of nitrate at about 30ppm goes down to about 10 after a water change.. And minimal phosphate readings getting better..

okay I took a picture or if my phone if you blow it up you could kind of see the shape this is one part of the tank that had a few bigger ones some of them are more around some of them are egg shape again there too tiny to even make out the shape in some cases

Trust me I did the same thing as you. They are pods I will not say they are copepods just PODS..

GOOD thing and good source of food for fish etc.

Enjoy the new tank.

Awesome!! I'm not going to worry about it anymore.. Maybe I'll look for a ruby red dragonet now!

This is a great guide to critter identification

As for dragonets do lots and lots of research b4 getting one. Their beautiful fish and it's sad to see so many die in tanks. They will decimate a pod population in no time and starve to death. There are some success stories of feeding them mysis shrimp but this is pretty rare.

Also consider that other fish like wrasse will eat pods and will further decrease the pod population

Good luck

JVH its a new system and I wouldn't get a dragonet.

My tank has been up for a year and I cannot keep a dragonet happy. Maybe if I had a 300 gallon system or a pod factory but in a 60g no way am I doing that.

No I will Waite!

I did manage to get another picture of one of those little white bugs most of them are oval or really tiny little round specs. Now I've noticed one or two here or there that are very long and thin I took a picture and blew it up and below is what I got.. Still looks like Copepods?

Ugh! Ok so I have a simultaneous outbreak of pods AND bristle? Geesh!
OK, so do I just let these thousand of tiny creatures just grow and let them be? They are really unsightly and if they go away soon that will be ok but its been almost a week and its getting worse and additional things are being born!

Small critters like this populate based on food levels, of they are exploding in population it is because there is enough waste and detritus for them to do so, maybe cut down on feeding and increase water change frequency and the population will go down on its own!

The copepods and copedites mandarins/dragonette eat are generally small specs and will require a magnifying glass to see well, the bigger "underwater crickets" are amphipods and while some dragonette of larger size can eat this most don't, but almost any other fish will!! None of these are bad things if population is kept in check just more tank cuc diversity!

I feed 2x a day... I was going to try and cut back to once a day but I haven't yet.. guess its time :(
